'SECOND SEASON' BEGINS: THE FALCONS VS. THE MAC
With the 14-game non-league schedule completed, the Falcons now embark upon the Mid-American Conference schedule ... BGSU enters the Akron game with an all-time record of 321-140 (.696) in MAC regular-season contests, the most wins and highest winning percentage of all conference institutions ... additionally, BGSU leads the all-time series with all 11 MAC opponents ... BG, obviously, is the only team in the league with a winning series record against every other school.
FALCONS PICKED TO WIN MAC TITLES
The BGSU women's basketball team was picked to win both the MAC's East Division and the conference tournament in 2010, according to the league's preseason poll ... additionally, juniors Lauren Prochaska and Tracy Pontius were selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team ... the Falcons received 22 of the 36 votes to win the East Division ... BGSU has won five consecutive MAC regular-season titles.
EAST DIVISION
1 - Bowling Green (22 1st-place votes); 2 - Kent State (12); 3 - Miami (2); 4 - Akron; 5 - Ohio; 6 - Buffalo
WEST DIVISION
1 - Toledo (18); 2 - Ball State (14); 3 - Northern Illinois (4); 4 - Central Michigan; 5 - Eastern Michigan; 6 - Western Michigan
MAC TOURNAMENT PREDICTED WINNER: Bowling Green
NOW THAT'S A FIVE-YEAR PLAN (CONFERENCE-ONLY VERSION)
In MAC games over the last five years, the Falcons have no fewer than 72 victories ... that's an average of 14.4 wins per year (a pretty impressive feat considering each team plays just 16 MAC games per season) ... BGSU's average win total in MAC play nearly DOUBLES the program's total number of losses (eight) during that five-year span.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
With a 10-4 record in non-conference play, BGSU has posted a winning non-league record for the eighth-straight year ... and, as mentioned earlier, the Falcons had at least 10 non-conference victories for a fourth consecutive season ... BG had never won as many as 10 non-conference games in a season prior to the current streak ... more info on BGSU's non-league success can be found later in these notes.

• The Falcons had just one senior on the roster a year ago ... Lindsey Goldsberry ended her career as the winningest basketball player – man or woman – in MAC history ... BG had a record of 114-20 in her four years, for an average of 28.5 wins.
• Through 14 games this year, junior Lauren Prochaska leads the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding ... Uhl has 4.6 rebounds per game, ranking third on the team ... she is shooting .471 from the field, while Breske has a .469 field-goal rate.
• Junior Maggie Hennegan and sophomore Jessica Slagle have 5.2 and 2.7 ppg, respectively ... Hennegan has 4.8 rebounds per game to place second on the team ... • The returnees in the junior class include a pair of highly-decorated players in Prochaska and Pontius ... Prochaska, a wing, was the 2009 MAC Player of the Year, while Pontius, a point guard, was an honorable-mention selection to the Associated Press All-America Team ... both Pontius and Prochaska earned All-MAC First-Team honors in 2008-09.
• Juniors Uhl, Chelsea Albert and Kelly Zuercher also returned ... Uhl started the final 13 games last year at a forward spot ... sophomores Slagle and Maribeth Giese round out the returning letterwinners.
• Two other players are in their first playing season at BGSU ... Nurse, a fifth-year senior (Univ. of Oregon), and Hennegan, a redshirt junior (Saint Louis Univ.), participated in practices at BGSU last season, but sat out the year after transferring from other NCAA Division-I schools.
• Five newcomers also joined the program in 2009-10 ... that list includes a quartet of freshmen in Simone Eli, Allison Papenfuss, Chrissy Steffen and Jessie Tamerlano ... BGSU has been outrebounded only three times in 14 games this year.
THE MAC SCHEDULE
The 2009-10 season is the fifth utilizing the current MAC scheduling format for women's basketball ... each of the 12 schools opens conference action with five intra-divisional games, followed by six cross-divisional contests and five more intra-divisional games to close the regular season ... so, BGSU will play five games vs. East Division schools to begin and end the MAC season, with six games vs. the West Division teams in the middle of the conference schedule.

MILLER MOVING UP
The win over SIU Edwardsville was the 189th of Curt Miller's head-coaching career ... Miller, who became the winningest coach in BGSU history two years ago, has moved into a tie for third place on the Mid-American Conference list ... Fran Voll also had a total of 189 victories, at BGSU and Central Michigan (Voll had 144 victories with the Falcons and 41 with the Chippewas) ... only Kent State's Bob Lindsay and former Toledo coach Mark Ehlen have more wins at a MAC institution.
2 SCORES 20 FOR 25TH TIME
Junior Lauren Prochaska scored 27 points vs. SIU Edwardsville, for her sixth game of 20 points or more this year, and the 25th such contest of her Falcon career ... Prochaska has scored in double digits in 74 of her 82 career games at BGSU.
PROCHASKA OVER THE 1,300-POINT MARK
Less than halfway into her junior season, Lauren Prochaska has surpassed the 1,300-point mark for her career ... Prochaska, who already ranks 14th on the BGSU career scoring list, now has a total of 1,340 points in her Falcon tenure ... her next target is 13th-place Carin Horne, who scored 1,341 points from 2003-07 ... the Falcon junior is averaging 16.3 points per game, the second-highest average in BGSU annals, in her career.
LAST TIME OUT
Junior Lauren Prochaska scored a game-high 27 points, helping the Falcons to a 70-57 win over SIU Edwardsville Saturday afternoon (Jan. 2) ... with the win, BGSU improved to 10-4 on the season, concluding the non-conference portion of the schedule with a double-digit win total for the fourth consecutive year ... additionally, the win was the 189th in Curt Miller's BGSU tenure, moving the ninth-year Falcon head coach into a tie for third place on the MAC wins list ... seniors Tamika Nurse and Tara Breske scored 11 and 10 points, respectively ... Nurse took only three shots from the field, but was 9-of-11 from the foul line ... Prochaska made 10 free throws in 12 attempts as the Falcons had a productive day from the stripe ... BGSU shot just 30.4 percent from the field on the afternoon, but the Brown and Orange went 32-of-40 (.800) from the free-throw line ... the Cougars shot .379 from the floor and went 9-of-15 (.600) from the stripe ... in addition to her point total, Prochaska also led the Falcons in rebounding ... junior Maggie Hennegan had seven points, seven rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots for the home team ... the Cougars got 15 points and seven boards from Raven Berry ... BGSU led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but SIUE scored the first nine points of the second period to tie the score ... several minutes later, though, a Prochaska putback sparked a 5-0 run, giving the Falcons the lead for good.
TAKE SOME, THEY'RE FREE
BGSU had season-high totals in free throws made (32) and attempted (40) in Saturday's win over SIU Edwardsville ... the Falcons' frequency and proclivity at the line offset BGSU's .304 field-goal percentage, which was a season low ... the Falcons also had season lows in field goals made (17), three-pointers made (four) and assists (10), but had a season-high eight blocked shots.
SLAGLE PROVIDES A SPARK
Sophomore Jessica Slagle scored three points in the SIU Edwardsville game, but provided a spark off the bench in the second half when the Falcons sorely needed it ... she hit a three-pointer on her first possession after checking into the game, then came up with a steal and fired the ball ahead to a wide-open Tara Breske for a transition layup and a nine-point BG lead with just under 10 minutes left ... the Slagle three-pointer began a 7-0 run that was capped by the Breske layup.
SCOUTING AKRON
Akron enters Wednesday's game with an overall record of 6-7, and the Zips are looking to snap a three-game losing streak ... UA concluded non-conference play with a last-second loss to a 12-2 Lehigh team on the road, as the hosts scored with 1.8 second left for a 59-57 decision ... prior to the three-game losing streka, which also included setbacks to Niagara and Temple, the Zips had won four-striaght games ... the Falcons and Zips have two combined opponents, as both clubs defeated Chicago State but lost to St. Bonaventure ... Guzzardo, Murphy, Tamboue and junior guard Amber Witt (4.6 ppg) each have started all 13 games for head coach Jodi Kest, while Baumgartner has made 12 starts ... Kest welcomed back eight letterwinners, including all five starters, from last year's team that finished with an 11-19 overall mark and a 6-10 MAC ledger ... Kest has a record of 34-68 in her fourth season in Akron ... she is 260-221 in her 18th year as a collegiate head coach ... the school's athletics web site is www.GoZips.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Akron, 41-2, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has won the last 12 meetings ... BGSU is a perfect 22-0 in home games vs. the Zips, including an 80-51 in last year's meeting at Anderson Arena (Jan. 17, 2009) ... in the return match, the Falcons picked up an 81-70 decision in Northeast Ohio (Feb. 21, 2009) ... overall, the Falcons won the first 26 series meetings, before UA's initial win, in the 1999 MAC Tournament ... the Zips' other win was an 88-63 blowout in Akron in February of 2001 ... Curt Miller has a record of 12-0 against Akron during his head-coaching tenure ... additional series information can be found in the PDF version of these never-tedious game notes.
HOME COOKIN'
The Falcons are 5-0 at venerable Anderson Arena this season to date, and BGSU has won 24 of the last 25 games at "The House That Roars" ... 19 of those 24 wins have comme by double digits ... the lone loss in that time came to Indiana in the third round of the 2009 Postseason WNIT.
ROAD WARRIORS
The Falcons have posted five wins on the road this year to date ... three of those victories have come against teams – Oakland, Vanderbilt and Canisius – that qualified for national postseason play last year ... the Hartford game (Dec. 30) was the ninth road contest for the Falcons this season ... seven of those nine opponents are teams that won at least 20 games and advanced to national postseason play last season ... three of them – Ohio State, Marist and Vandy – went to the NCAA Championships last March, while four – OU, St. Bonaventure, CC and Hartford – advanced to the WNIT ... those seven teams had a total of 177 wins, an average of 25.3 victories per team, in 2008-09.
HOME IS WHERE THE JANUARY GAMES ARE
After playing nine of the season's first 13 games on the road, the Falcons now return home for much of the month of January ... BG plays six of this month's nine games in the friendly confines of Anderson Arena ... the Falcons have spent 11 nights in hotels during the first month-and-a-half of the season ... now, however, BGSU will have just one overnight trip during the entire month of January.
PASSING THEIR BOARDS
Last season, the Falcons had more rebounds than the opponent just 13 times in 34 games ... this year, BGSU has outrebounded the opposition 10 times in the first 14 games ... the Falcons tied the opponent in that category on one other occasion (the Hartford game), and trailed SIU Edwardsville by just one rebound in Saturday's game ... when outrebounding opponents, BG is 111-11 in the Curt Miller Era, including a 91-4 mark in the last five-plus seasons.
THE FALCON SENIORS
Fourth-year Falcons Tara Breske, Laura Bugher and Sarah Clapper helped the Brown and Orange average 28.7 wins per season in their first three years after arriving on campus ... that trio has been a part of the two winningest teams in program history, as well as four of the five national postseason wins in BG annals ... BGSU has gone 96-21 overall and 43-5 in MAC regular-season action since Breske, Bugher and Clapper came to the school ... Tamika Nurse, a fifth-year senior, is in her first playing season after sitting out last year as a transfer from the Univ. of Oregon.
THE JUNIORS
BGSU has posted a record of 65-17 overall, and the Falcons are 28-4 in MAC regular-season games since Chelsea Albert, Tracy Pontius, Lauren Prochaska, Jen Uhl and Kelly Zuercher set foot on campus ... that is an average of 27.5 wins per year through the first two seasons ... the Falcons have played national postseason tournament games at Anderson Arena in each year, beating Dayton in the '08 WNIT and facing Syracuse and Indiana in that tourney at home in 2009 ... Maggie Hennegan joined that group for the 2009-10 season ... Hennegan sat out last season as a transfer after playing two years at Saint Louis Univ.
THE SOPHOMORES
Maribeth Giese and Jessica Slagle helped the Brown and Orange to 29 wins – the second-highest total in MAC history – along with a school-record 25-game winning streak in their first year in BG ... the Falcons are 39-9 since the duo arrived in Northwest Ohio ... Danielle Havel is a member of the sophomore class, but will sit out the 2009-10 season after transferring from DePaul Univ.
THE FRESHMEN
Four freshmen joined the Falcons for the 2009-10 season ... that list includes Simone Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa), Allison Papenfuss (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne), Chrissy Steffen (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Jessie Tamerlano (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton).
FRESHMEN FINDING THEIR WAY
With a 16-player active roster, it is always a battle for playing time ... but, BG's four freshmen have had success in spots as of late ... Chrissy Steffen had eight points at Hartford, setting a career scoring high for the third-straight game ... after scoring five points in BG's first 10 games, she has had 21 points in the last four games, including a career-high eight at Hartford ... Jessie Tamerlano scored her first six collegiate points at Canisius, going 3-for-3 from the field, to start a three-game span in which she scored 14 points ... Allison Papenfuss had six points in the win at Youngstown State, after scoring eight points in the UNC Greensboro game earlier this year ... she had four points and tied her career high with four rebounds vs. SIU Edwardsville ... and, Simone Eli hit a triple for her first career points in the win over Appalachian State ... she had a rebound and her first collegiate assist vs. SIUE.
PURA VIDA!
Head coach Curt Miller and the Falcons jump-started their season in August, heading to Costa Rica on the first foreign tour in program history ... the Falcons benefitted from four games vs. local competition, in addition to 10 days of practices leading up to the tour ... in addition to the practices and games, the 12 players (the 10 returnees from 2008-09, plus the two transfers who sat out last season at BGSU) were able to bond together through a week and a half of diverse experiences, including whitewater rafting, zip-lining through the rainforest and hiking on a volcano.
JUST AS SUCCESSFUL IN THE CLASSROOM
The Falcons had one of the most successful seasons in program history on the court in 2008-09 ... head coach Curt Miller's program had one of its most successful campaigns in the classroom as well ... BGSU was ranked fifth in the entire nation on the WBCA's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for 2008-09 ... the awards recognized teams throughout the country that had the highest grade point averages for 2008-09 ... as a team, the Falcons had a GPA of 3.470 in '08-09 ... BGSU was the only MAC program on the list, and the Falcons were also the only program from the state of Ohio in the Division-I Top 25.
TREY BIEN!
A pair of juniors are moving up the BGSU career list for three-point field goals made ... Lauren Prochaska hit three more triples vs. SIUE, and is in sole possession of second place on that list ... with 182 long-range makes in her career to date, she trails only school record-holder Liz Honegger ... Honegger made 216 triples from 2003-07 ... Tracy Pontius, in just her second year as a starter, ranks 10th on the list ... Pontius has 118 threes in her career ... she is five behind her former teammate, Lindsey Goldsberry (123 from 2005-09).
BLOCK PARTY
Senior Tara Breske has moved into sole possession of fourth place on the BGSU career list for blocked shots ... Breske has blocked 85 shots in her Falcon tenure to date ... she passed Joelyn Shoup (83 blocks from 1982-86), and is 13 blocks shy of matching third-place Megan McGuire (98 blocks from 1985-89) on the BGSU chart.
A SCHOOL RECORD? WE MAY NEVER KNOW
BGSU head coach Curt Miller has played a total of 15 different players on five occasions this season already ... a dozen and three Falcons played in the wins over UNC Greensboro (Nov. 27), Detroit (Dec. 9), Canisius (Dec. 19), Appalachian State (Dec. 23) and SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 2) ... that total is the highest in over 25 years ... none of Miller's first eight teams at BGSU had more than 14 players on the active roster ... the last team to have as many as 15 players see action in a season was the 1985-86 squad ... the '84-85 Falcons also had 15 players, while the 1983-84 team – like the 2009-10 team – had 16 players who saw action in at least one game ... tragically, single-game information from the glorious decade of the 1980s is sketchy at best, so we may never know if any of those teams had 15 or 16 players see action in the same game.
A SCHOOL RECORD? WELL, NO, BUT IT'S STILL A LOT
Of those 15 players to see action in the scoresheet in the Appalachian State game, no fewer than 14 found the scoresheet ... that total is the most in the Curt Miller Era ... the last time 14 different players scored in a game was on Jan. 22, 2001, at Kent State ... unfortunately for the Falcons, however, only one player scored more than six points in that game, a 92-55 loss to the Golden Flashes in Kent.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS II: THE GORY DETAILS
• As mentioned, BGSU had a winning non-league record for the eighth consecutive year ... BG is the only Mid-American Conference school to have turned that trick.
• BGSU had not had as many as three consecutive winning seasons in over a decade (since 1991-92 to 1993-94), prior to beginning the current streak ... now, of course, the Falcons have posted eight-straight winning seasons in non-conference action, for the longest such streak in school history.
• The 2008-09 team was the fourth in a row to tie or break the school record for non-conference wins in a season ... BGSU's total of nine non-league wins in 2005-06 tied the school record, before the '06-07 team had 11 to set a new mark (and a MAC record as well) ... the '07-08 and '08-09 teams also had 11 non-league wins, while this year's team had 10 ... the Falcons have had at least seven non-league victories in each of the last eight seasons.
• Since the start of the 2002-03 season, BG is 73-25 (.745) in regular-season, non-league games, for the most wins and highest winning percentage of any MAC school in that time ... the Falcons have set a new school records for non-league wins in a four-year and a five-year period ...
