With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 11-0-0 on the season. Butler is the only remaining unbeaten, untied team in NCAA Division I. The Falcons, who see a two-game winning streak come to an end, drop to 4-5-2 overall.
Butler, ranked No. 8 in the country in several national polls and ninth in two others, scored three times in a 10-minute span midway through the first half. Five different players found the back of the net for the Bulldogs.
"It's a really tough result, but I'm not disappointed in our effort today," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "We weren't terrible today; we just weren't at our best, and when we made mistakes, Butler punished us.
"It wasn't a bad effort on our part, but when you play a top-10 team on the road, you need to be at your best. Every time we made a mistake, they made us play."
Austin Oldham began the scoring, taking a pass from Adekunle Oluyedun and converting from directly in front of the goal. Oldham's goal, just over 16 minutes into the match, proved to be the winner.
Julian Cardona doubled the Bulldogs' lead just over four minutes later. Matt Hedges began the scoring play, sending a pass forward to Kyle Pateros. Pateros found Cardona in front of the net, and Cardona slipped a shot past BGSU junior Miguel Rosales.
Ben Sippola, BU's leading scorer, got his team-high seventh goal of the year just under six minutes after Cardona's marker. Sippola finished a cross from Brett Heinz, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead at the half.
Tyler Pollock was involved in the scoring of both BU goals in the second period, scoring from 10 yards out with just over 55 minutes gone, then setting up Adam Glanzer in the 72nd minute of play.
Jon Dawson made four saves to earn the shutout for the Bulldogs. For the Brown and Orange, Rosales had two stops. Butler had a 17-9 advantage in total shot attempts, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
BGSU will return to the road this weekend, heading to Oneonta, N.Y., for a Mid-American Conference game against Hartwick College on Saturday night (Oct. 16). Hartwick is a MAC affiliate member for men's soccer. That match begins at 7:00 p.m. at Elmore Field.
