Team Sets Meet Record in 200 Freestyle

The Bowling Green State University began the Petra Martin era by hosting the annual Tom Stubbs Relays on Friday night (Oct. 15) at Cooper Pool.

Joining the Falcons in the season-opening meet were the University of Akron, Oakland University and Youngstown State University.

The team kicked off their new coach's first season with six victories in the ten relays. In the other four relays, the Falcons finished second once and in third place three times.

Emily Bennet, Brittany Szekely, Carrie Enright and Sarah Reinink set a Tom Stubbs Relays record when they won the 200 yard freestyle. The group finished in just 1:36.55, breaking the old record by nearly two full seconds, and won the race by nearly three seconds.

Each of the four schools at the meet entered two teams in the relay, and BGSU's second team placed fourth.

Szekely, Reinink, Bennet and Vicky Yu nearly set another meet record in the 400 freestyle, the night's last event. Their relay group finished first in just 3:33.34, just nine one-hundredths of a second off the meet record of 3:33.25.

Along with Alexis Kain, Bennet, Yu and Szekely also won in the 200 yard medley relay. Their composite time of 1:47.05 again nearly broke a meet record, which is 1:46.16 for this event.

The Falcons also won the 300 yard breaststroke relay, the 400 yard medley relay, as well as the 400 yard individual medley relay.

Further, the team had two of the top three relay teams in the 300 yard butterfly event. The team of Sarah Burston, Vicky Yu and Liz Harper finished just one-half second behind the winning team from Akron.

After the meet, Coach Martin said, "I am pleased with today's results. We learned a few things and will keep working hard towards our season goals."

The team begins conference action in just two weeks, when the University of Akron swim team returns to Cooper Pool for a complete meet. Action on begins at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 30th.
