Meet Is Conference Opener for Both Teams
The Bowling Green State University swimming team will take part in its first complete meet of the 2010-11 season on Saturday when they host the Akron Zips at Cooper Pool.
The meet, which begins at 1:00 p.m., is the inaugural Mid-American Conference action of the season for both teams and will feature 14 swimming events.
The two teams will compete in five freestyle races -- the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. They will also race the 100 and 200 yard butterfly, as well as 100 and 200 yard backstroke and breaststroke events. The meet includes a 400 yard individual medley and two relays -- the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle.
Although the Falcons have not released the names of who will be competing in each event, several current members of the roster have made their way into the record books in the last two seasons.
Vicky Yu and Sarah Burston share the BGSU record time of 0:54.67 in the 100 butterfly. The same two athletes occupy the two best times in Falcon history in the 200 butterfly (2:00.26 and 2:00.92).
In the 100 breaststroke, Amanda Rom owns the school record time of 1:03.03, and she has the second-best personal record time (2:16.75) in the 200 breaststroke, less than one second off the all-time record. Last year, Alexis Kain approached history in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.90.
Not to be outdone, Sarah Reinink and Carrie Enright are both on the Bowling Green top-ten individual records list in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
The Falcons, under the direction of new head coach Petra Martin, enter the 2010-11 conference season with the goal of improving on last season's 1-6 MAC record. As part of that goal, Bowling Green aims to reverse last season's result against the Zips, as Akron defeated BGSU 183-111 in last season's conference finale.
Although BGSU has not competed in a full meet yet this season, Akron will arrive on Saturday with three meets under their belt. The Zips are 0-2 after losing to Illinois and Pittsburgh, and they travel to Oakland tomorrow.
