Day One Results
Swimming competitively for the first time in nearly one month, the Bowling Green State University swim team stormed Jones Pool at Eastern Michigan University and came away with a solid fourth place standing after the first day of the two-day EMU Invitational.
On Friday (Dec. 3), the Falcons competed in six events - the 100 free, the 1650 free, the 200 back, the 200 breast, the 200 fly and the 400 free relay. At the conclusion of those events, BGSU had accumulated 157 points and is within striking distance of Ball State (180) and Eastern Michigan (189).
The Falcons sit 66 points ahead of fifth place Ashland. Michigan leads the invitational with 277 points.
A full two-thirds of the meet is left to be competed on Saturday (Dec. 4) with 12 swimming events split over two sessions.
The top event for the Orange and Brown was the 200 fly, in which BGSU placed two in the top five. Junior Vicky Yu finished second, completing the swim in 2:02.43, two seconds behind the Adrienne Bicek of Michigan. Senior Sarah Burston finished just 1.5 seconds behind Yu in fifth place (2:03.97).
Freshmen Kristina Roop and Erica Cutler finished 12th and 15th, respectively, to also earn points for BGSU. In all, the four swimmers brought the Falcons 38 points in just one event.
In the 200 breaststroke, the Falcons entered two swimmers, and both finished in the top six. Junior Amanda Rom exceeded her seed time by nearly six seconds to finish fourth in just 2:18.68. Not to be outdone, sophomore Alexis Kain placed sixth and earned the fifth-best personal record in BGSU history in the event as she finished in 2:19.80.
As in the 200 fly, the Falcons scored points with four different swimmers in the 100 free. Freshman Brittany Szekely led the way and established herself as the team's active record holder in the event as she finished in 0:51.95, breaking the previous active record of 0:52.42 by Sarah Reinink. Reinink also raced, picking up five points for 12th place (0:52.67).
Senior Carrie Enright also established a new personal record, completing the 100 yards in 0:52.39. Enright, along with Reinink and Szekely, each now sit in the top six of BGSU's top-ten list for personal records in the 100 fly.
Sophomore Emily Bennet (0:52.71) also gathered four points for the team, as BGSU earned 30 for the event.
Alexa Harris placed seventh in the 200 back, earning 12 points with a time of 2:04.24. Meanwhile, Megan Bomicino (17:29.82, 7th) and Jen Beatty (17:47.69, 9th) totaled 21 points for BGSU in the 1650 free.
Rounding out the night, Szekely, Enright, Reinink and Bennet combined for a time of 3:30.10 in the 400 free relay to place fifth and gather 28 more points.
The meet resumes tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with a seven-event session and will conclude with a five-event session at 6:00 p.m. Live stats, which indicates the order of events in each session, can be accessed HERE.
