The Falcons vs. The Catamounts (Feb. 19 • 1:15 p.m.)
In BGSU's opening game of the tournament, the Falcons will take on the Western Carolina Catamounts for the first time in program history. In 2009, the Catamounts racked up an overall record of 12-35 and 7-14 in Southern Conference competition, finishing eighth in the conference. Leading the Western Carolina crew is head coach Christine Hornak, who is in her fourth season with the program. The Catamounts are returning seven key players, including junior infielder, Amber Hawkins, who was named to the Southern Conference Preseason First-Team. Western Carolina has yet to compete in the 2010 season as the team's first tournament in Georgia was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
The Falcons vs. The Bulldogs (Feb. 19 • 5:45 p.m.)
With just a short break between games, the Falcons will be back on the diamond to take on the No.8 squad in the nation, the Georgia Bulldogs (1-3); also competing for the first time in the program's history. Last weekend, (Feb. 13 and Feb. 14) the Bulldogs won three of four games at the Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational. Georgia defeated No. 4 Michigan, 6-4, Central Florida, 12-0 and Florida Atlantic, 5-1. The team's only loss came from No. 7 UCLA, 2-3. Junior Bulldog pitcher, Sarah McCloud, earned the SEC Pitcher of the Week award, following the first week of competition. The Bulldogs recorded a 2009 overall record of 47-12 and 18-7 in the South Eastern Conference (SEC). Vying for a chance to become the 2009 Softball World Series champions, the Bulldogs fell to Washington, the No. 1 team in the nation, in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. Under the tutelage of head coach Lu Harris-Champer (nine seasons), the Bulldog softball program has become a national contender, producing a 452-168 (.729) overall record and 166-92 (.643) record in the SEC.
The Falcons vs.The Eagles (Feb. 20 • 12:15 p.m.)
On day two of the Red and Black Classic, the Falcons will square off against the Winthrop Eagles (0-2). In the Eagle's first tournament of the season, they fell to Coastal Carolina, 2-0 and South Carolina, 6-4. Finishing second in the Big South Conference in 2009, Winthrop posted a 26-21 overall record and 15-3 conference record. The Eagles are led by head coach Mark Cooke, who has been with the Eagles since 1989. The Falcons defeated the Eagles, 2-0, in 2006 when the two teams last met on the diamond.
The Falcons vs. The Hokies (Feb. 21 • 9:00 a.m.)
In the fourth and final game of the tournament, the Falcons will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies (3-1). So far this season, the Hokies have defeated Bethune-Cookman, 14-3, Drexel, 5-3 and UNC Greensboro (8-2), but have come up short against Jacksonville, falling 7-11. In the 2009, the Hokies went .500 (28-28) overall and 8-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The program is led by head coach Scot Thomas, who has been at the helm of the softball squad for 15 years.
