The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will enter the CSU match with a 6-3 record this season to date. BGSU dropped the dual-match opener, then reeled off six consecutive victories. The Brown and Orange will be looking to snap a two-match losing streak on Friday, having lost at Michigan State (2-5; Feb. 13) and against UIC 1-6; Feb. 21), with the latter match marking BG's first-ever loss at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
BGSU's singles competitors have combined for a record of 81-48 this year to date, including a 31-22 mark in dual matches. Junior Christine Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio, has a 7-2 record in duals at the number-one singles flight. She won four consecutive matches before suffering a loss against UIC last weekend.
Senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel are 5-4 at the second and third flights, respectively, while freshman Maddy Eccleston has a 6-3 mark in fourth-flight action. Eccleston's results have mirrored the team's results to date, as she picked up singles wins in each of the Falcons' three dual-match victories, but suffered losses against Louisville (Jan. 16), MSU and UIC.
Three different players have competed at the fifth flight, with sophomore Jessica Easdale having seen action in each of the last three duals. Easdale is 2-1 in those matches, and picked up BGSU's lone win in the UIC match. Easdale has a 4-1 overall record in duals, having gone 2-0 at the sixth flight to date. Freshman Katie Grubb has played in six matches at the sixth flight in the spring.
In doubles, the duo of Chiricosta and Eccleston has gone 7-2 at the top flight this spring, including a win against UIC. Babina has teamed with freshman Jade Johnson for a 6-3 mark at the second level, while Kintzel has teamed with Grubb and Easdale for four matches apiece at the third flight. The Kintzel/Easdale and Kintzel/Grubb tandems each are 2-2 in the spring. Grubb has joined Kintzel in doubles action for each of the last three matches and four of the last five.
Cleveland State enters the weekend with a record of 5-5 in dual-match play this season. After dropping four matches, all on the road against strong competition (Ohio State, Western Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue), the Vikings won four-straight matches before falling to Akron last weekend. CSU rebounded with a 7-0 win over Robert Morris. A year ago, the Vikings finished 17-11 overall and 5-3 in Horizon League play.
The Falcons and Vikings have seen each other this year already, as CSU participated in the BGSU Invitational back on Sept, 19-20, 2009. BGSU plays dual matches against eight of the nine schools that joined the Falcons at that season-opening tourney at Keefe Courts, and BG is 5-0 in such matches to date.
The Falcons lead Cleveland State, 4-0, in the all-time series between the teams. BGSU picked up a 7-0 win over the Vikings last season (Jan. 23, 2009), in the Falcons' first-ever match at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Although the teams have crossed paths numerous times in various tournaments and invitationals, last year's contest marked the teams' first dual-match meeting in nearly a decade (since April 10, 1999).
Following Friday's match, the Falcons' next competition will come on the team's trip to Orlando, Fla., over spring break. BGSU will face South Dakota (March 9), Temple (March 10) and North Dakota (March 12) while in the Sunshine State, before returning to the Midwest. BG's next home action is a March 19 date with Duquesne at the PTC.
