The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up a 5-2 road win over Cleveland State University Friday night (Feb. 26). The non-conference match was held in Rocky River, Ohio.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-3 on the year, while dropping the Vikings to 5-6.
The hosts captured the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. The BGSU team of senior co-captain Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson picked up an 8-4 win at the middle flight, but CSU won the top and bottom flights, including a narrow 8-6 decision at flight number one.
In singles play, however, the Falcons won five of the six matches. Those five wins included three straight-sets victories and a pair of comeback wins.
Babina dispatched of Maria Lazaris in two sets at the second flight, while fellow senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel lost just five total games in a win over CSU's Nicole Janek at the third flight.
Freshman Maddy Eccleston lost only three games in her fourth-flight win over Sanda Bjelan, while sophomore Jessica Easdale and Johnson posted come-from-behind victories. Easdale rallied back after dropping a 6-4 opening set, winning the second set by that same 6-4 score before blanking Gibbons, 6-0, in the third set. In fact, Easdale trailed by a 4-1 score in the second set, before winning 11 consecutive games to close out her match.
At the sixth flight, Johnson lost a narrow 7-5 set to Mengdi Lu, but lost only five total games in the remaining two sets. She picked up a 6-4 win in the third set to capture the match.
"This was a barnburner, and a match that we easily could have lost," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "Jessica and Jade handled the pressure well, and really came through in the clutch. It was college tennis at its best!"
The Falcons are now idle from competition until March 9, when BGSU plays the first of three matches in Orlando, Fla., as part of the team's spring trip.
