Laura Avila Signs With Bowling Green Volleyball
April 14, 2010 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle has announced the signing of 5-foot-6 setter Laura Avila to a National Letter of Intent on the first day of the spring signing period Wednesday afternoon. Avila is a senior at Yorktown High School in Yorktown, Ind. and is the daughter of Ramon and Terry Avila.
“I'm thrilled that Laura will be a part of our program,” Van De Walle said. “She is a talented setter, an exceptional student, and has tremendous leadership skills, which was evident when she won the Mental Attitude Award for Indiana at the state championships this fall. As well, she comes from one of the best club programs in the country (Munciana) so she's used to winning.”
Avila comes from a volleyball-rich background as her father played volleyball at Ball State during the same time that Van De Walle played on the women's team at Ball State.
“It's very special to me because we go way back,” Van De Walle said. “Who would have thought that I'd be coaching his daughter years later? Knowing Laura like I do, I know she will come in ready to compete for a spot on the floor right away. She makes us better as soon as she gets here and she tops off a very talented 2010 class.”
Along with being the 2009 Indiana Class 3A State Mental Attitude Award winner, Avila was First Team All-State, All-Hoosier Heritage Conference, All-Delaware County, and All-State Academic Honorable Mention. A three-year team captain, Avila led the Tigers with 1,154 assists and 60 aces, while adding 261 digs and 106 kills. She guided Yorktown to a 37-2 record, including 7-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, and to the state runner-up.
As both a sophomore and junior, Avila was All-Hoosier Heritage Conference and All-Delaware County. Along with her volleyball accolades, she lettered four years in tennis at Yorktown. Off the court, she is the salutatorian for her class and received the Academic Award of Excellence as a sophomore, junior, and senior, as well as being named to the National Honors Society as a junior and senior.
Avila played club volleyball with Munciana and competed on the 2006 Junior Olympics runner-up and the 2004 Junior Olympics third place team.
