Falcons Prep for Mid-Week Matchup Against Notre Dame
April 05, 2010 | Softball
Bowling Green State University head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcon softball squad will travel to South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday (April 7) to take on the No. 24 nationally ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Falcons are coming off a 2-2 record on the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference competition, but will be looking to improve their overall record against the Fighting Irish.
Game Notes as of April 5, 2010
Notre Dame is currently 26-6 overall and 5-0 in the Big East. UND is on a two-game winning streak as they most recently swept a two-game weekend bout against Rutgers. The Fighting Irish softball program is led by head coach Deanna Gumpf, who has led UND to an overall record of 332-153-1 in eight seasons.
In 2009, the Fighting Irish finished second in the Big East (43-17 overall, 19-4 Big East). Garnering a record good enough to earn a spot in the 2009 NCAA Softball Championships, UND lost to Michigan during the NCAA Regionals. In 2010, UND has brought back seven starters, losing only two upon the end of the 2009 season.
Historically, the Falcons and Fighting Irish have had fairly even outcomes in contests over the years. Starting in 1991, BGSU has gone 6-7 against ND, taking wins in 1991 (2), '92 (3), and '95. The most recent Falcon and Fighting Irish showdown was in 2006 when Notre Dame defeated BGSU 0-1.
Falcons Finally Came Home!
After 49 days, three tournaments and 15 contests, the Falcons finally made their season debut at Meserve Softball Field sweeping a doubleheader against Central Michigan (April 2), winning 6-4 in the first game and 3-2 in the second. BGSU looked to continue its winning streak against the Eastern Michigan Eagles in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday (April 3 and April 4); but came up short both times, losing 9-2 on Saturday and 3-2 on Sunday. Of the 34 contests BGSU will compete in throughout the 2010 campaign, the team will host only eight at home.
Freshmen! Freshmen! Freshmen!
Of the six freshmen on the 2010 Falcon squad, three have started 18-18 games. Those three Falcons, Paige Berger, Hannah Fulk and Andrea Arney are leading the team in batting averages; Berger fronts the team with a .306 batting average, while Fulk is in second (.289) and Arney in third (.250). Amongst leading the team's batting average, Berger also leads BGSU in hits (15), homeruns (7) and slugging percentages (.796). Fulk has the most doubles on the team (4), is the most walked member of the team (13) and and boasts the highest on-base percentage (.467).
Hannah Fulk Named MAC Player of the Week
Hannah Fulk, a freshman from Jeromesville, Ohio, was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, as released by the conference office on Tues., Feb. 23, 2010. Fulk played in and started all four of the Falcon's games at shortstop at the Red and Black Classic in Athens, Ga. She contributed to the Falcons 2-2 tournament record, posting five hits for the team, including three doubles and one homerun—the first of her career as a Falcon-- that resulted in a .500 batting average, a .667 on-base percentage and 1.100 slugging percentage. Fulk's first career home run came in the top of the third inning against the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs that resulted in two RBI's. Fulk had one double in BGSU's win over Western Carolina and two doubles against Winthrop, one of which helped the Falcons take a 9-7 lead in the top of the sixth, before falling to the Eagles in the bottom of the inning. At the tournament Fulk was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases and was walked a total of five times.
