Lexington, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team extended the nation's second-longest active streak by earning The American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the tenth consecutive year. In all, the Falcons have received the award 11 teams, fourth-most in the country.
A record total of 450 high school and college men's and women's volleyball teams received the award for 2009-10, smashing the previous record of 409. The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was instituted in 1992-93, honors teams with a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average.
Bowling Green posted a 3.36 cumulative GPA through the 2009-10 spring semester. Two members of the team have a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA.
"I get really excited around this time of year when I know the AVCA will be honoring teams that excel in the classroom," BGSU volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle said. "Receiving the award 10 years in a row is incredible and it shows that we are serious about academics year-in and year-out. Mark (Hardaway), Rob (Frost), and I are so proud of our players. They deserve a lot of credit for what they do."
Nebraska holds the all-time record by being honored 13 times, while Morehead State and Indiana State have received the award 12 times. Bowling Green has been named 11 times, while Denver, Eastern Michigan, and Toledo earned the award 10 times.
In consecutive fashion, Indiana State has the longest streak in the nation with 12 consecutive years. Bowling Green is tied for second with 10 in a row, along with Toledo and Denver.
