Falcons Succeeding in Summer Leagues
July 09, 2010 | Baseball
Patrick O'Brien tops the class of returning Falcons in summer success after being named to the Great Lakes League All-Star team.
After capturing a share of their third straight Mid-American Conference Eastern Division championship and taking their success deep into the conference tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio many of next year's returning team have taken their skills to summer league teams around the area to extend their seasons. Among those Falcons, two have shined early and placed themselves in prominent company. Shortstop Jon Berti is playing in one of the most elite summer baseball leagues, the Cape Cod League while teammate Patrick O'Brien has recently been selected to the Great Lakes Summer Baseball League All-Star team.
As a member of the Brewster Whitecaps, the 2010 MAC First Team selection and All-Mideast Regional teamer is helping his team maintain their first place standing in the CCBL East Division standings. Berti has played in 20 games, to date, in the middle infield for the Whitecaps. The Cap Cod Summer Baseball League is one of the longest-standing and established summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country and features players from NCAA Division I programs such as College World Series participants Texas Christian University and Cal State Fullerton in addition to Texas, Georgia and Oklahoma.
After his first season as a Falcon serving as the team's primary closer and reliever, O'Brien has assumed the same role with the Stark County Terriers and has exceled. In 12 innings of work over eight appearances, he has registed four saves and fosters a 3.00 earned-run average earning him a spot on the 2010 GLSC All-Star team. Of the 53 total players selected, O'Brien will play for the visiting Red Team. The GLSC All-Star game is set for Wednesday, July 14 and will played at Western Hills High School, home of the league's Cincinnati Steam.
