BGSU concludes three-game homestand Sunday vs. Xavier
A goal exactly 20 minutes into the match gave visiting West Virginia University the lead for good, and the Mountaineers went on to a 3-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon/evening (Aug. 27). The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Field on the BGSU campus.

With the victory, WVU, receiving votes in all of the national polls, improves to 1-1-0 on the young season. The Falcons drop to 0-2-0.
Caroline Szwed got the visitors on the board with 20 minutes elapsed in the first half, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead that they took into the halftime break. Second-half goals by Mallory Smith and Frances Silva gave WVU some insurance.
Smith's goal came at the 62:12 mark, while Silva scored with just over 12-and-a-half minutes left.
Ashtin Larkin had assists on each of the Mountaineers' first two goals. On the opening goal of the match, Larkin slid a short pass to Szwed, who hit a hard, low shot that skipped past redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Becca Ison and into the net.
The second goal came midway through the second half, as Larkin played a left-side cross into the box, where the onrushing Smith knocked it home. Silva closed the scoring by heading home a cross from Katie Lenz.
The Mountaineers had a commanding 26-5 lead in shot attempts. Ison played the first half in goal for the Falcons, making three saves. True sophomore Laura Arnold worked the second half and made four stops.
The Falcons will be back in action at Cochrane Field on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 29), hosting Xavier University. That match begins at 1:00 p.m., and admission is free.
FALCON NOTES
* BGSU's youth was/is evident in a scan of the boxscore ... seven of the team's 11 starters had made five or fewer career starts heading into Friday's match ... two of those players, redshirt sophomore Becca Ison and true freshman Kylie Briem, were making their first collegiate starts.
* Briem was one of three Falcon players to play all 90 minutes, joining senior co-captains Alicia Almond and Katie Stephenson in that group.
* Freshman Ashley Miller saw her first playing time as a Falcon, getting 20 minutes of work ... Miller played in the team's scrimmage vs. Windsor, but did not see action in the regular-season opener against Cincinnati.
* The Falcons wore brown uniforms for the first 5:56 of the match on Friday ... after play was stopped for a conversation among the officials, however, it was decided that BG's brown jerseys were too similar in color to WVU's navy blue shirts ... the Falcon players switched to white jerseys for the remainder of the match.
