With the win, Valpo improves to 5-0-1 on the season. The Crusaders are off to the best start in school history. The Falcons fall to 1-2-2.
"Tonight was a tough game," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "I'm really proud of the enthusiasm and energy that the guys put into this game. That's probably why it hurts so much to lose it.
"But, Valpo is a good team. They are built to get results, and that's what they did tonight."
Wei Ming Wong headed home a corner kick at the 13:06 mark to give the hosts a lead they would not relinquish. Jake Freisinger gave Valparaiso some insurance with an unassisted goal in the 73rd minutes. Freisinger's goal came after a long run, and ended with a shot that he was just able to sneak inside the right post.
The Crusaders had a 16-14 advantage in shot attempts, but BGSU had seven shots on goal to VU's five. Most of the Falcons' shots, however, were from distance.
Perhaps BGSU's best scoring chance came in the 82nd minute, as senior tri-captain Thomas McLean sent a shot toward the left post from just inside the 18-yard box. VU goalkeeper Ryan Schwarz had to dive to get a hand on the ball, pushing it just wide.
Schwarz was credited with seven saves in his complete-game shutout effort. BGSU junior Miguel Rosales made three stops at the other end, including a spectacular lunging save on Adrian Ortiz in the 59th minute.
BGSU's starting lineup included four freshman. Two of those frosh, Matt Griesinger and Jacob Eganhouse, were in the starting 11 for the first time in their collegiate careers.
"Again, this was a tough one," said Nichols. "We got knocked down a little bit. But, we'll pull ourselves back together and get ready for Wright State."
The Falcons, after playing four of the season's first five matches away from home, now return to Cochrane for four of the next five games. BGSU begins a three-game homestand Wednesday (Sept. 22), taking on Wright State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
BGSU also will host Lipscomb on Sunday (Sept. 26) at 11:00 a.m., as the first half of a doubleheader at Cochrane Field. Admission to all Falcon home soccer matches is free.
