Scouts Check Out Talent at the Stell

Pro scouts from around Major League Baseball came to Bowling Green to witness the talent in the Falcon lineup, Wednesday.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Taking advantage of every day of good weather left this fall will be critical for the BGSU Baseball team with 14 freshman set to join the ranks next season. Equally, if not more, important for some is to take advantage of professional scouts watching the Falcons display their skills in off-season drills, workouts and exhibition games. Yesterday, the baseball team had 42 extra eyes observing their team activities and many shined during the opportunity.
Wednesday the team's position players engaged in a pro-style workout that included running the 60-yard dash, throwing drills from their respective positions and taking batting practice. The team then broke into two separate squads, Orange and Brown, and played a six-inning scrimmage.
Twenty-one scouts, all with Major League Baseball (MLB) affiliations, were in attendance watching from the stands at Warren Steller Field. This marks the highest turnout of scouts since Fall 2004.
The Brown team lost a late lead to the Orange crew in a 9-7 defeat. Trailing by one run in the top of the sixth, senior Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio) belted a three-run bomb for the Orange team to take the lead and eventually, the win. Freshman Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio) earned the save, closing out the bottom half of the sixth.
Despite the Orange team earning the victory, the Falcons as a whole saw many encouraging performances from all its members. Junior Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) went 2-for-4 on the day with a RBI double and a single. Returning healthy for his senior year, Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Vir.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a single, as well. Sophomore Taylor Rhoades chipped in on the scoring effort with a bases-clearing double for the Brown team.
From a pitching perspective Fisher, Patrick O'Brien (Boardman, Ohio), Nick Bruns (St. Henry, Ohio) and Michael Frank (Maumee, Ohio) all pitched well in the inning of work each posted. Senior left-hander Dan Parsons (Strongsville, Ohio) faced three batters and struck out each of them.
The Falcons have now completed two of their three scheduled inter squad scrimmages leading to the annual Brown vs. Orange World Series, scheduled to begin on Oct. 3 at noon. The team's next inter squad scrimmage is Sunday, Sept. 26 at Steller Field. First pitched is slated for noon. Both the scrimmage and the Brown vs. Orange World Series are free and open to the public.
