LIGHTS, CAMERA, MAC-TION!
Friday's match will be the first home night game in BGSU women's soccer history. The Cochrane Field lights project will be completed this week, with light standards erected at each of the four corners of the field. The final portion of the towers will be installed on Tuesday (Oct. 18), and both the BGSU men's and women's teams will play under the lights this weekend. The official dedication will take place on Saturday (Oct. 22), as the men's soccer Falcons host Hartwick College at 8:00 p.m.
SENIOR DAY
Sunday will be 'Senior Day' for the Falcons, as BGSU's four seniors will be recognized in ceremonies prior to the match against Northern Illinois. The senior class consists of team captain Alyssa Zuccaro, along with Megan Amann, Courtney Beinlich and Brittany Hopkins.
MAC TOURNAMENT RACE HEATING UP
Believe it or not, there are only three games remaining on the regular-season schedule for each of the MAC's 12 women's soccer. Currently, BGSU is sixth in the MAC's East Division and 11th overall. The Falcons have a 2-6-0 league record, good for six points (teams earn three points for a win and one point for a tie).
According to the MAC's 2011-12 handbook, the eight teams with the highest point accumulation, regardless of division, will qualify for the MAC Tournament. Currently, BGSU is one win out of a playoff spot, as Buffalo and Miami are tied for eighth place overall with nine points apiece. The Falcons' three remaining matches are against WMU, NIU and Miami.

SCHEDULING QUIRK
All five of BGSU's 2011 games vs. MAC East Division foes are on the road. Last year, the Falcons played all five intra-divisional matches within the confines of Cochrane Field. BG hosts five of the six West Division programs in 2011, facing only Central MIchigan on the road in cross-divisional play.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons will enter the weekend with an overall record of 5-12-0 on the season, and BGSU is 2-6 in MAC play. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange suffered a pair of narrow road losses, falling by a 1-0 final at Akron on Friday night (Oct. 14) before dropping a 2-0 decision at Ohio on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16).
The Falcons opened the conference portion of the schedule with a 2-1 win at Buffalo (Sept. 23), but BG then suffered shutout losses at Kent State (1-0 in OT; Sept. 25) and at home to Toledo (1-0; Sept. 30) and Ball State (2-0; Oct. 2). The Brown and Orange topped Eastern Michigan, 2-1 in overtime, in the team's last home game (Oct. 7), but dropped a 2-1 decision at Central Michigan (Oct. 9) before the Akron-Ohio swing. BGSU is 2-5-0 at home and 3-7-0 on the road this season to date. In league play, the Falcons are 1-2-0 at Cochrane Field and 1-4-0 in hostile venues.
Senior captain Alyssa Zuccaro leads the team in scoring, with 10 points this season. She has five goals this year to date, while no fewer than seven of her teammates have one goal apiece. 'Z' had both of the Falcons' goals at UB, and also scored vs. Niagara (Sept. 4), Youngstown State (Sept. 11) and EMU.
Junior Sarah VonderBrink is second on the Falcons in scoring. Her six points include one goal and a team-leading four assists. Those assists include helpers on the game-winning goals at YSU and UB, and her goal was a match-winner as well, at Cleveland State.
In addition to VonderBrink, sophomores Ashley Miller, Kaitlyn Tobin and Tracy Togba and freshmen Kaylee Draper, Sidney Huth and Kenzie Schlemitz each have one goal this season. Tobin's goal was a 90th-minute winner vs. the Penguins, while Huth's first collegiate goal was an overtime game-winning strike against EMU.
Senior Megan Amann has three assists this fall to date, while Miller and sophomores Ivi Casagrande and Madeline Wideman have one. Amann's assists came on VonderBrink's winning goal at CSU, Zuccaro's goal at YSU and Schlemitz's score at CMU.
Redshirt junior Becca Ison has started 16 matches this season to date. Ison has played more than 1442 minutes, and has 81 saves along with two shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.75. Ison made a career-high 11 stops in the Illinois State game, and she had nine saves at MSU and eight vs. Detroit, Niagara and Toledo.
True junior Laura Arnold has seen action in two matches, playing the final seven-plus minutes at Buffalo before starting the Kent State contest. Arnold has a 1-1-0 record, two saves and a GAA of just 0.88.
Sophomore Alyssa Carmack is the lone player to have played every second of all 17 matches this fall, while Draper has played 1509 of the 1,544-plus minutes. Zuccaro has been on the field for 1482 minutes, while Ison has played 1442, redshirt freshman Kylie Briem 1356 and junior Emily Rothwell 1182. Briem, Carmack, Draper and Zuccaro each have started every match this fall to date, while Ison has made 16 starts and Rothwell and redshirt sophomore Jenny Fowler 13 starts apiece.
Head coach Andy Richards and his staff, assistants Kellie Evans and Jimmy Walker, welcomed back a total of 17 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's club. BGSU's returning players combined for nearly 67 percent of the team's goals and almost 73% of the assists a year ago. Four of the Falcons' top-five scorers returned from the 2010 campaign, including Zuccaro, who led the team in scoring. Zuccaro had one-third of the team's goals, with eight, and also led the Brown and Orange with six assists. Her total of 22 points was the highest by a BGSU player since the 2005 season.
LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons suffered a pair of narrow road losses to East Division foes last weekend. On Friday (Oct. 14), BGSU dominated the second half of play, but Akron scored the lone goal of the match with under 10 minutes left. Redshirt junior Becca Ison made two saves for the Brown and Orange.
On Sunday (Oct. 16), Ohio scored in each half for 2-0 win over the Falcons. The 'Cats got on the board with 7:20 left before halftime, and doubled the lead in the 73rd minute. Ison made four saves in her complete-match effort.
THE OPPONENTS
Western Michigan has an overall record of 9-7-0, and the Broncos will enter Friday's match at Cochrane Field with a MAC mark of 5-3-0. The Broncos have won four of the last five matches, including a pair of 1-0 home wins over Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan last weekend. Western is 5-2-0 in home games, 2-4-0 on the road and 2-1-0 in neutral-site matches this season to date. Stephanie Skowneski and Anina Cicerone have combined to score 13 goals this year. Skowneski has a team-high 19 points on six goals and a WMU-leading seven assists. Cicerone's 16 points include a team-best seven goals. Brittney Pavlica has four goals this fall, including the game-winning scores against both CMU and EMU last weekend. In goal, Michelle Watson has started 15 of the 16 games. She has seven shutouts, 64 saves and a goals-against average of 1.15. Head coach Suzie Grech welcomed back 13 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's team. The 2010 Broncos went 10-7-5 overall and 5-2-4 in the MAC. The school's athletics web site is www.wmubroncos.com.
Northern Illinois is 2-12-2 overall, and the Huskies will take a 1-7-0 MAC mark into a Friday game at Miami. In that match, Northern will be looking to break a three-game losing streak, including 1-0 setbacks against EMU and CMU last weekend. The Huskies' lone MAC win was a 1-0 triumph at Buffalo on Oct. 7. After scoring only three goals in the season's first 11 games, the Huskies then scored four goals over the next three matches, prior to last weekend's losses. Northern is 1-8-2 at home and 1-4-0 on the road this fall to date. Frances Boukidis and Samantha Hill each have two goals to share the NIU lead in that category. Boukidis also has team-leading totals of three assists and seven points. Amy Carr has played in all 16 games in goal, and has 62 saves, two shutouts and a GAA of 1.53. Head coach Carrie Barker welcomed back 16 letterwinners, including seven starters, from a year ago. The 2010 Huskies went 9-9-1 overall and 5-5-1 in MAC action. The school's athletics web site is www.niuhuskies.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Western Michigan, 10-7-1, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Broncos have won the last two meetings by the slimmest of margins. Last season, host Western picked up a 1-0 win in double overtime in Kalamazoo on a goal by Megan Matula (Oct. 22, 2010). Two seasons ago, the Broncos' Stephanie Skowneski scored with just 57 seconds remaining in regulation, for a 3-2 Western win (Sept. 27, 2009). That win snapped a four-game BGSU winning streak in the series, which included a pair of victories in 2008. The second '08 win saw Alyssa Zuccaro scored for the Falcons in a 2-0 triumph in a MAC Tournament quarterfinal, in the teams' last meeting at Cochrane Field (Nov. 2, 2008). The teams have not met in a regular-season match at Cochrane since a 3-1 BG win in the 2007 season (Sept. 30, 2007). BGSU is 4-2-1 in home games, 1-8-0 in road contests and 2-0-0 in neutral-site matches against Western.

THIS WEEK'S RANDOM, POINTLESS NOTE: TWO-GOAL LEADS NOT NECESSARILY SAFE
A word of advice for fans who venture out to Cochrane Field this weekend: if one team takes a two-goal lead, do not assume that the game has been decided. In 310 matches in the history of the BGSU women's soccer program, only 10 times has a team gone ahead by two goals and failed to win the match. We're not saying it will happen this weekend, but ... five of those 10 matches have come when the Falcons are facing either Northern Illinois or Western Michigan (this weekend's opponents). The complete list ...

YOU CAN'T SPELL 'GOALZ' WITHOUT 'Z'
Senior Alyssa Zuccaro's goal in the Falcons' win over Eastern Michigan (Oct. 7) increased her career total to 20. She has moved into a tie for third place on the BGSU career list. 'Z' is now deadlocked with both Jill Conover (1999-2002) and Tracy Gleixner (1998-2002) on that list. That trio trails only Kristy Coppes (52 goals from 2001-04) and Samantha Meister (28 goals from 2002-05).
A FEW MORE NOTES ABOUT ALYSSA ZUCCARO
• Senior Alyssa Zuccaro has a career total of 50 points, ranking sixth on the BGSU list. She passed Britt Anderson (49 points from 2002-05) in the EMU match, and is one point behind Corbie Yee (51 points from 2005-08).
• Three of Zuccaro's five goals on the season have come in MAC play. She scored twice in the win at Buffalo, for her first multi-goal game of the season and the third of her career. Zuccaro leads the Falcons with five goals and 10 points this season.
• Zuccaro led the Falcons in goals (eight), assists (six) and points (22) last season. Her 2010 goal and point totals were the highest by a BGSU player since 2005 (Samantha Meister, eight goals and 22 points).
• In her Falcon career, Zuccaro has 10 goals in home matches and 10 goals away from home. 'Z' has scored a total of 26 points (10 goals, six assists) at Cochrane Field and 24 (10 goals, four assists) in road or neutral-site matches.

FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, now in his 12th season at the helm, has proven himself to be one of the top mentors in MAC women's soccer history. He has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 107-120-26, and a record of 57-61-15 in MAC regular-season play. Richards picked up the 100th victory of his collegiate head-coaching career in the Falcons' 3-2 win at Indiana State last fall.
Richards' teams perennially play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the MAC. In his first decade-plus in BG, he has led the Falcons to the MAC Tournament on eight occasions, with the team advancing to the semifinals seven times. BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no coach has more trips to the league tourney title game than Richards' five. Two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships. Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown.
A native of Warwick, England, Richards earned his Bachelor of Education degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1989. He received his Master of Education degree from Oregon State in 1997.
RICHARDS IS IN THE TOP-FOUR
Falcon head coach Andy Richards is one of the winningest mentors in MAC women's soccer history. Currently, Richards ranks fourth on the conference's all-time wins list.
