With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-2 on the year. BGSU has won five-straight games, including three over Horizon League foes. The Penguins drop to 4-4.
Rogers, a redshirt sophomore, exploded for a career-high 23 points, and also set a career standard with 11 rebounds. The double-double was the first of her collegiate career.
Steffen had 21 points, her third 20-point game in the last four contests, and added seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. The junior played all 40 minutes.
Rogers scored 14 of her points in the first half, matching her previous career high by the intermission. Steffen had 13 second-half points, and scored eight of 10 BGSU points over a two-and-a-half-minute stretch late in the game, as the Falcons increased the lead from one point to nine.
Senior Jessica Slagle scored 12 points, while redshirt junior Danielle Havel added eight. Havel's well-rounded stat line included five rebounds and a career-high six steals.
There were five ties and 12 lead changes in Tuesday's game. The Penguins got back-to-back three-point field goals from Kenya Middlebrooks and Brandi Brown just 34 seconds apart, taking a 55-54 lead with 9:17 remaining. But, junior Allison Papenfuss hit a long two-point jumper from the left baseline, giving the Falcons the lead for good with 8:14 left.
Rogers gave the visitors a three-point lead with a jumper, but Brown responded with a shot of her own at the 6:52 mark. After Slagle converted a putback in the paint, Brown got to the line and made a pair of free throws, cutting BG's lead to 60-59.
But, Steffen's jumper with 5:36 left began a 6-0 run for the Falcons, as part of a larger 13-2 run to end the game. Another Steffen hoop was followed by a Havel bucket with 4:11 remaining. Brown responded with a basket at the other end, but Steffen hit a shot with 3:30 on the clock, then knocked down a pair of free throws for a 70-61 lead with 3:05 left.
The Falcons, after making 17-of-20 charity tosses in the first 37 minutes of the game, then sank only one of the next seven tries from the line. But, the Falcons forced the Penguins to miss their final six field-goal attempts in the contest, and Slagle drained a pair of free throws with 50 seconds left to close the scoring.
BGSU shot 40.3 percent from the field, including a 13-of-28 effort (46.4%) after halftime. The Penguins shot an even 40% in the game.
The Falcons held a 40-39 rebounding advantage, and BG forced Youngstown into 21 turnovers. The Brown and Orange had a 24-11 advantage in points off turnovers, and BGSU posted a double-digit steal total for the fifth time in this season's seven games.
Brown and Middlebrooks paced the Penguins with 15 points apiece. Middlebrooks hit a game-high three three-point field goals, as YSU made eight long-range shots to BGSU's three.
The Falcons had a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint on the night, setting a season-high total in that category.
BGSU scored the first seven points of the game before YSU began to battle back. Rogers hit a shot in the paint, then stepped outside the arc and drained a three-pointer withi just under two minutes gone. Havel's driving layup increased the lead to 7-0 before Heidi Schlegel got the home team on the board with a triple at the 16:12 mark. That snapped a streak of six consecutive missed shots by the Penguins.
Schlegel's trey began a 9-1 run for the home team, capped by shots from Melissa Thompson and Brown. Brown's jumper at the 12:31 mark put the 'Guins on top, 9-8.
Havel drew Macey Nortey's second foul of the game and split a pair of free throws to tie the score. Then, Steffen hit a layup as Nortey was called for her third foul with just 8:29 gone. Steffen's ensuing free throw, out of a media timeout, completed the three-point play.
Nortey stayed in the game, feeding Devan Matkin for a three-pointer that tied the score, 12-12. The lead changed hands several times over the next few minutes, before a 6-0 run gave the hosts a five-point advantage, their largest of the game.
That run began with a Tieara Jones shot in the paint, and continued with a Middlebrooks putback. When Kelsea Fickiesen drove down the middle and banked a shot off the glass, YSU had a 24-19 advantage and Falcon coach Curt Miller took a timeout. YSU's six points came in a span of just 57 seconds.
But, the Brown and Orange would respond, eventually. The score remained the same for over a minute, but freshman #Logan Pastor hit a layup with 3:19 on the clock. That shot began a 13-0 run for the visitors.
After Brown was called for an offensive foul -- her third foul of the contest -- Rogers scored in the paint. And, after the Penguins threw the ball away, the Duke transfer hit her second layup in 30 seconds to give BG a 25-24 lead.
Papenfuss banked home a shot from the right side, off of a Pastor assist. Then, Pastor drove and kicked the ball to Steffen for a three-ball from the right side with 1:05 left in the half. For good measure, Steffen stole the ball from Fickiesen and swooped in all alone for a layup and a 32-24 BG lead.
Middlebrooks stopped the run, hitting a triple with under seven seconds left in the half, and a 55-foot shot by Pastor hit the rim and bounced off. The Falcons went to the lockerroom with a 32-27 advantage.
Middlebooks scored on the opening possession of the second period, but Havel drove towad the hoop and drew Brown's fourth foul of the game with 19:15 on the clock. Havel hit both free throws, and Rogers then increased the Falcons' lead to seven points with a nifty drive and scoop. Brown answered with a bucket, but Nortey was called for her fourth foul with 17:57 still remaining in the contest. Slagle, fouled in the act of a three-point attempt, hit all three of her resulting tosses for a 39-31 BG lead.
The lead increased to 10 points when Steffen knocked down a pair of shots from the stripe. But, a trey by Fickiesen began a 7-0 YSU run that cut the lead to three points.
Havel's nice look inside resulted in an easy layup for Rogers, but the Penguins again scored seven-straight points. Matkin scored the last five points in that stretch, including a three-pointer that put YSU up, 45-43, with 13:10 left.
Steffen came up with a steal and a nifty pass to Matthews for an 'and-one' layup at the 12:30 mark. Matthews' free throw put BG ahead by a point. Liz Hornberger hit a layup of her own, but Rogers took a Steffen pass and drilled a straightaway three-pointer with 11:28 remaining. Slagle's sweet fake and right-side drive to the basket resulted in another three-point play for the Falcons, giving BG a 52-47 lead with 10:58 left.
Back came the Penguins. After the teams traded hoops, Middlebrooks and Brown hit triples 34 seconds apart, with Brown's trey putting YSU on top with 9:17 remaining. Steffen's pass to Papenfuss resulted in the junior's long jumper with 8:14 left, giving BG the lead for good.
A Rogers offensive rebound and layup increased the margin to three with 7:10 left, but Brown answered with a layup. Slagle grabbed an offensive board and banked the ball high off the glass and through the hoop, putting BG up, 60-57, with 5:58 on the clock.
Brown sank a pair of free throws, but Steffen drove for a layup with 5:36 remaining. The junior would hit another layup 55 seconds later, and Havel's one-hander in the lane gave the Falcons a 66-59 edge with 4:11 remaining. Brown answered with a hoop at the 3:46 mark, but YSU would not score again. Steffen hit yet another layup with 3:30 left, and the Falcons would make five free throws -- albeit in 11 tries -- the rest of the way.
The Falcons return to Northwest Ohio for a pair of games at the Stroh Center this weekend. BGSU will face Austin Peay on Friday (Dec. 9), in a 7:00 p.m. start, before taking on Jacksonville Sunday afternoon (Dec. 11).
