Chicago, Ill. - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team took part in the Three Wise Men Tournament at Loyola University of Chicago, taking five of nine sets total.
Each pool match consisted of two sets and a crossover match was best two-of-three. The Falcons split with Illinois-Chicago 22-25, 25-23 before losing to Notre Dame 25-17, 25-22. The team bounced back to sweep Loyola 25-17, 26-24 and then edged out Milwaukee in the crossover contest 21-25, 26-24, 16-14.
Freshman Danielle Tonyan led the team with 31 kills (3.44 per set) on the day and freshman Paige Penrod added 29 (3.22 per set). Another freshman, Lindsey Butterfield, added 21 (2.33 per set). Sophomore Kari Galen led the defensive effort at the net with 11 blocks (1.37 per set) and freshman libero Ashley Dunn had 42 digs (4.27 per set) and passed at a 2.21 average. Freshman Laura Avila directed the offense from the setter position with 97 assists (10.78 per set).
"It was a great day for us," Head Coach Denise Van De Walle said. "Everyone played some, we played really good competition, and we found a way to finish sets by the end of the day. We were upset the we let a 22-20 lead over Notre Dame in the second set slip away. But against Milwaukee, we came back by five down to win 26-24 and then finished out a 14-14 tie in the third set. We learned a lot today. The more we play, the better we are getting. I am really proud of our performance."
