May 09, 2011 | Baseball, General, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Charles Wooten and softball player Paige Berger.
Male Athlete of the Week
Charles Wooten, a senior from Elmore, Ohio, tossed his first career complete game for the Falcons on Mother's Day in a 5-1 win over Akron. He struck out two and allowed only one run on seven hits in his nine innings pitched. Wooten kept the Akron four through nine hitters to a combined 3-for-19 (.158) on the day and retired the side in order on three different occasions. From the sixth inning on, Wooten allowed only one hit to the Akron lineup.
Female Athlete of the Week
Paige Berger, a sophomore from Rootstown, Ohio, hit .600 (9-for-15) with two doubles and three home runs as BGSU went 3-1 on the final weekend of the 2011 season. Berger slugged 1.333 and hit a walk-off three run homer in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against Ohio. She had also homered in the opening game of that set and then completed the weekend with a two-run homer and a two-run double on Mother's Day, sparking the team to a 7-3 victory over Akron.
