July 25, 2011 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 11th consecutive year, extending NCAA Division I's second-longest active streak. In all, the Falcons have earned the award 12 times, tied for fourth-most in Division I.
The AVCA Team Academic Award was instituted in 1993 and honors teams with a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average or better. A record total of 481 college and high school men's and women's volleyball teams earned the award this year, which recognizes the 2010 season.
“This is great news as I start my final season,” Head coach Denise Van De Walle said. “I'm absolutely thrilled that the team earned this award again! Our student-athletes work hard every year, so to see their academic efforts rewarded with this national award makes me so proud. Winning this award for the 12th time, and 11th in a row, speaks volumes to our philosophy at Bowling Green to recruit the whole package. Congratulations to a very special team!”
Bowling Green has two student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average and nine student-athletes carry a 3.30 gpa or better.
Bowling Green's string of 11 consecutive years earning the honor is tied with Toledo and Denver for second-place among active streaks. Indiana State leads NCAA Division I by being recognized 13 straight years.
Nebraska, Morehead State, and Indiana State have each been award the honor 13 times in the 19-year history of the award to lead all of NCAA Division I. Bowling Green follows by being awarded 12 times, while Denver, Toledo, and Eastern Michigan have earned recognition 11 times.
