September 12, 2011 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University sophomore volleyball player Paige Penrod was named Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week. She was named Most Valuable Player of the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational as she helped the Falcons to a 3-0 record.
During a historic weekend for Bowling Green volleyball, the Falcons beat previously undefeated Michigan State in the first ever varsity athletic event in the new Stroh Center. In fact, Michigan State has not lost a set in any of its other eight matches but Penrod had 19 kills, seven digs and two blocks as the Falcons beat the Spartans 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23 Friday evening. She followed that up with her first double-double of the season, posting 19 more kills to go with 10 digs in a four-set win over SIU-Edwardsville. Penrod also hit .389 in that match.
Finally, in Bowling Green's sweep of Canisius that clinched the tournament championship, Penrod had a team-high 16 kills and hit at a .519 clip. In all, she averaged 4.91 kills per set and 2.36 digs per set, while serve receiving at a .972 rate. Penrod has been a critical part of Bowling Green's 9-0 start, which has already surpassed last year's eight-win campaign and is the longest winning streak for the program to start a season since 1990.
Penrod is the third Bowling Green player to be honored by the Mid-American Conference in three weeks to start the year. Kari Galen earned MAC East Defensive Player of the Week honors last week and Danielle Tonyan was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week prior to that.
