HINCKLEY, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's golf team featured three individuals in the final top-20 of the tournament field as the squad posted its highest team finish in two years by placing second at the 2011 Cleveland State University Invitational.
The Falcons success is no accident. What they received at Cleveland State was a total team effort. While the team's top two scorers slid during Tuesday's final round, the other three members of the five-player group improved their play. This allowed the Falcons to maintain their hold on second place.
Bowling Green shot a 321 one day after posting a 319. The team total of 640 was two shots better than Dayton and St. Francis (Pa.), who tied for third place.
Bailey Arnold finished with BGSU's top score for the third consecutive tournament. Arnold tied for 11th with a 36-hole total of 158 (77-81).
After tying Arnold for the team lead in Monday's first round, Paula DiFrancesco stayed right on her heels throughout the second round and finished with a 82 during the final 18 holes. Her composite 159 gave her a tie for 14th place.
Shelby Wilson and Amy Ruthenberg each nudged their scores back into the 70s on Tuesday when they carded matching rounds of 79. Wilson paired her 79 with a first-round 82 for a total of 161 and 19th place. Ruthenberg tied for 21st overall, out of 61 players, with a final tally of 162.
Kelsey Benson completed her first tournament of the year by playing better in the final round. She notched an 84 on Tuesday after a first-round 86. Her total (170) matched that of Patricia Holt. Holt recorded back-to-back 85s. Jen Blanchard (178) also competed for Bowling Green.
Oakland ran away with the team championship. The Golden Grizzlies shot 602 over the tournament's 36 holes and finished 38 strokes ahead of Bowling Green. Oakland featured five of the top seven individuals in the tournament. However, the individual champion (Ann Colligan) came from St. Francis. Colligan carded a 146 to finish five strokes ahead of Oakland's Alanna Gerber.
Bowling Green's next tournament takes place in one week. The team travels to Dayton, Nev. for the Wolfpack Women's Classic on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4.
