September 04, 2011 | Volleyball
Tampa, Fla. – Bowling Green junior middle Kari Galen was named Most Valuable Player of the USF Volleyball Invitational, while senior Emily Kauth and sophomore Ashley Dunn were named to the all-tournament team. The Falcons went 4-0 to earn the tournament championship, their second of the first two weeks of the year.
Galen earned her first career all-tournament award, much less being named MVP, as she dominated defensively at the net. In the team's opening match at the USF Volleyball Invitational, Galen had a career-high 10 blocks in a five-set win over Eastern Kentucky. She followed that up with at least five blocks in each of the next three matches and totaled 26 during the tournament. Galen also finished with 29 kills and hit .386 on the weekend.
Kauth was named to the all-tournament team for the second time this year after posting 35 kills and hitting .333 on the weekend. She added 10 blocks in four matches and was especially strong during the opening day of the tournament. Kauth had 10 kills in each of the first two matches, hitting .474 in the win over Eastern Kentucky and a sterling .643 in a three-set sweep of Bethune-Cookman.
Dunn was named to an all-tournament team for the first time in her career by playing consistently throughout at the tournament as the libero. She had 47 digs on the weekend with a match-high 16 in a three-set sweep over host South Florida. Dunn also serve received at a .969 clip and added two aces and 11 assists.
Bowling Green is 6-0 on the season and off to its best start since 1990. The Falcons will host the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational Friday and Saturday in the Stroh Center, beginning with a match against Michigan State Friday night at 6 p.m.
