September 05, 2011 | Volleyball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University junior middle Kari Galen has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week. Galen is the second Falcon in two weeks to be honored by the MAC, following sophomore Danielle Tonyan who was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week last week.
Galen was named Most Valuable Player at the USF Volleyball Invitational after leading the Falcons to a 4-0 record and a tournament championship. She had eight kills and a career-high 10 blocks as the Falcons beat Eastern Kentucky in five sets to open the tournament. She followed that up with at least five blocks in each of the final three matches for a team-best 26 blocks during the tournament. Galen added 29 kills and had a .386 attack percentage during the weekend, starting all four matches.
Galen has been a big factor in the Falcons' 6-0 start, the best winning streak to open the season for the team since 1990. She ranks second in the conference with a .422 attack percentage on the year and is also second in the league with 1.50 blocks per set.
Bowling Green will be back in action Friday for the first day of the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational at the Stroh Center. The Falcons will host Michigan State Friday night at 6 p.m. in the first varsity athletic event played in the new arena.
