BGSU to face Duquesne as dual-match season begins on Saturday
The Bowling Green State University tennis team returns to action this weekend, heading to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a Saturday (Jan. 21) match as the 'spring' portion of the season begins. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will face Duquesne University, with the match scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Alpha Tennis & Fitness of Pittsburgh.
The Falcons resume play after a very successful fall schedule. BGSU took part in four non-scored tournaments, with four of the seven team members also participating in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. All seven players had winning records in both singles and doubles in the fall.
Junior Maddy Eccleston and sophomore Emily Reuland led the way, as each player went 22-6 overall in the fall. Eccleston led the Falcons with a 12-2 singles record, and was 10-4 in doubles play. Reuland paced the team in doubles wins, and had identical 11-3 marks in both singles and doubles.
Junior Mary Hil also reached the 20-win plateau in the fall. Hill had 10 singles and 10 doubles wins, putting together a 20-9 record. Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta was 19-8 overall in the fall portion of the schedule, while junior Katie Grubb's 18-4 record included a 9-1 singles mark. Grubb equalled her singles win total for all of the 2010-11 season.
Junior Jade Johnson had an overall mark of 15-7, including an 8-3 doubles ledger, while senior Jessica Easdale had a 9-4 record, winning all four of her doubles matches. Easdale missed some time due to injury during the fall schedule.
The Falcons and Dukes did not meet in dual-match action last season, but the teams have crossed paths several times in 2011-12 already. DU came to Northwest Ohio for two tournaments, including the BGSU Invitational on Sept. 16-17. And, both teams were in attendance at the Rocket Invitational in Toledo the following month (Oct. 14-15).
At the BGSU Invite, the Falcons went 2-1 in singles against DU players, and BGSU doubles teams were 1-0 against the Dukes. Interestingly, Grubb competed with Duquesne's Daniela Osio in doubles during that tournament, and the duo played a DU team (Alrissa Tobe and Alex Assaf), falling by an 8-6 count.
At the Toledo Rocket Hidden Duals, the Falcons were 7-1 against DU competitors in singles play, and BG doubles teams went 2-0 vs. the Dukes.
In dual-match play, the Falcons lead Duquesne, 5-0, in the all-time series between the teams. The Brown and Orange defeated the Dukes, 4-3, two seasons ago at the Perrysburg Tennis Center (March 19, 2010). The lone prior meeting in Pennsylvania came three years ago (Jan. 16, 2009), and saw the Falcons pick up a 5-2 road win.
Following this weekend's match, the Falcons will return to the road next weekend, heading to the Queen City for a match against Cincinnati on Friday, Jan. 27. BGSU's match vs. Youngstown State on Jan. 29, originally scheduled to be the team's dual-match home opener, has been cancelled as the Penguins are down to just three healthy players on the active roster.
The cancellation of the YSU match means that BGSU's home opener will be on Saturday, Feb. 4, as Chicago State comes to the PTC. The Falcons also will meet UIC that weekend (Sunday, Feb. 5) in Perrysburg.
