Three Falcons Named First Team All-MAC
November 15, 2012 | Volleyball
Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its volleyball all-conference teams today and three Falcons were named First Team All-MAC. Juniors Lindsey Butterfield, Paige Penrod and Danielle Tonyan all earned honors from the league. For Tonyan, it is the second consecutive year that she was named First Team All-MAC.
The trio helped guide the team to a surprising second place finish in the MAC with a 13-3 record, seven wins more than a year ago. The Falcons were picked by the coaches to finish third in the East Division in the preseason poll but far exceeded those expectations, leading the entire conference for much of the year after starting 8-0 in MAC play.
Penrod ranks third in the MAC in kills (3.92 per set) and second in service aces (0.32 per set). With 427 kills this year, she has posted at least 400 in two of her first three seasons and went over 1,000 career kills earlier this year. Penrod was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week once this season. She also has 17 double-doubles on the year and has six 20-kill matches, including a career-best 30 in a match against Utah. Penrod was named to all-tournament teams at the Purdue Active Ankle Challenge and the BYU Nike Invitational.
Tonyan did not disappoint after being named First Team All-MAC a year ago and preseason All-MAC this year. She ranks 10th in the conference in kills with 3.28 per set. She has 357 kills on the season and reached 1,000 for her career earlier this season. Tonyan posted her first career double-doubles this year with six such matches. She had a season-high 20 kills against Jacksonville State and was named to the Marquette Challenge All-Tournament Team.
While both Penrod and Tonyan were expected to have big years, Butterfield surprised many with a season worthy of First Team All-MAC status. She earned one Offensive Player of the Week selection, as well as being MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week once. She posted at least 10 kills in 13-of-16 conference matches after reaching that total just seven times a year ago and just four more times in 11 pre-conference matches. She had a career-best 21 kills at Eastern Michigan and was named just the fifth Falcon ever to earn Capital One First Team Academic All-District honors.
Bowling Green finished the regular season with a record of 18-10 overall and 13-3 in the Mid-American Conference, garnering the second-seed for the MAC Tournament, which begins Friday. The Falcons will face No. 7 Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals, held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
