Swimming Improves in Loss at Miami

Oxford, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University swim team suffered its first loss of the season Friday at Miami, as the RedHawks outpaced the Falcons, 173-113, inside the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Overall, BGSU swimmers won six races and dropped ten to the RedHawks, the third-place finisher at last year's Mid-American Conference Championships. Despite the loss, several Falcon swimmers improved their times from the previous week, which saw the Falcons defeat both Wayne State and Ashland in a tri-meet held at BGSU's Cooper Pool.
"Overall it was a pretty good meet - we swam well," said head coach Petra Martin. "I was really happy because we learned some things that we need to do a little bit better on the road that are different than when we were swimming at home. I think this is definitely helping people figure themselves out a little bit better and what they need. So it was an important experience for us."
Junior Joëlle Scheps led the way for the Falcons, taking first in the 200-yard IM and 200-yard freestyle. Scheps won the 200 free in a time of 1:53.45, more than a second ahead of teammate Jen Beatty, who finished second with a season-best 1:54.66. Scheps took the top spot once more in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:08.95 to claim another win late in the meet.
Alexis Kain, Alexa Harris and Jordan Bullock each earned individual wins, with Kain swimming a season-best 1:04.17 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The school record holder in the event, Kain's closest competition was nearly two seconds behind her mark. In the next event, freshman Bullock claimed a narrow win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.86, smashing her previous best time of 2:11.23, set at home last week. Harris notched a time of 2:04.66 to win the 200-yard breaststroke in a close race with Miami's Leah Thornton - the Falcon's final individual event win of the meet.
The loss drops the Falcons to 2-1 on the season (0-1 MAC). The Falcons are back in the pool on Saturday for a second-straight MAC contest on the road, as Bowling Green takes on Ball State at 1 p.m.
