Moon Township, Pa. - Nine different players scored and A'uston Calhoun finished with his first double-double of the season as the Bowling Green men's basketball team rolled to a 68-54 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday night in the final game of the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament.
Calhoun had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Falcons beat a team ranked No. 3 in the country at the NCAA Division II level that went 29-4 a year ago. UAH had already defeated NCAA Division I North Texas earlier in the NIT Season Tip-Off and pushed Cleveland State to the final possession Monday night.
Alabama Huntsville jumped out to a 9-2 lead and held its largest lead of the game at 21-13 with 8:58 to play in the first half. But the Falcons went on a 16-2 run over the next 6:33 and never trailed again. The run started with a Jehvon Clarke three-pointer, followed by a James Erger jumper and two Anthony Henderson free-throws. After UAH stopped the run with a lay-up, Cam Black scored on a jumper and A'uston Calhoun knocked down a three-pointer to give the Falcons a 25-23 lead.
Calhoun added two more free-throws and a lay-up to push the lead to six and the Falcons went into the break up 37-31 after a Luke Kraus jumper with 27 seconds remaining.
In the second half, Bowling Green pushed the lead to double-digits early, going ahead 47-36 after another Calhoun three-pointer. Calhoun followed with a lay-up inside to make it 49-36 but Alabama-Huntsville made back-to-back three-pointers to close to within seven.
The Chargers would eventually get to within five with 7:53 remaining but Clarke hit back-to-back jumpers, Richaun Holmes followed with a lay-up inside and Alabama-Huntsville never got within single-digits again.
Nine of the 10 players who saw action scored for the Falcons, led by Calhoun's 20. Chauncey Orr had a career-high 11 points, making both of his three-point attempts, and added four rebounds. Jordon Crawford had 10 points on 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and finished with four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Anthony Henderson came off the bench for five points and a career-best seven rebounds, while Clarke had seven points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Cam Black added six points and three boards.
Bowling Green held Alabama-Huntsville to just 29 percent shooting in the second half and 40 percent for the game. The Falcons outrebounded the Chargers 37-23 and committed a season-low seven turnovers. After making just 4-of-11 free-throws a night earlier, BGSU went 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Alabama-Huntsville falls to 3-3 with the loss, while Bowling Green improves to 2-3. The Falcons will open a five-game homestand next Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Detroit, a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago and is one of the favorites in the Horizon League to do so again this year.
