Danijela Tomic Announces Volleyball Coaching Staff
February 23, 2012 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – New Bowling Green volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced the completion of her volleyball coaching staff, hiring Tucker Short and Jessica Hohl as assistants. As well, Lindsay Laurent has been named the Coordinator of Volleyball Operations.
“I am very excited about my new staff because I feel we now have all the pieces in place to work towards winning the MAC championship,” Tomic said. “I was looking for loyal, hard working, enthusiastic and intelligent individuals, and Tucker, Jessica and Lindsay definitely fit that profile.”
Short will serve as Bowling Green's recruiting coordinator after serving in the same role for the past two seasons at Coastal Carolina. During his time with the Chanticleers, the program was recognized by the NCAA for a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR). Short is also very familiar with the Mid-American Conference, having spent four years as an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo. He served as the program's recruiting coordinator and primary setter coach, while also being in charge of scouting opponents and tape exchange.
“Tucker is a well respected up-and-coming young coach who will make an immediate impact on our program,” Tomic said. “His passion for the game and his playing and coaching background in combination with being a great recruiter, made him a perfect candidate for the position, and I am thrilled to have him on my staff.”
Short began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina in 2003 before moving on to Springfield College, his alma mater, to serve as the junior varsity head coach and a men's volleyball graduate assistant coach. He was a four-year letterwinner of Springfield from 2000-03 and a three-year team captain, where he led the program to three consecutive Division III National Championships. Short received his bachelors degree in physical education from Springfield in 2003.
“I would like to thank Coach Tomic for the opportunity to be part of such a tradition-rich program,” Short said. “There is a unique, positive energy surrounding Bowling Green volleyball and I am looking forward to being a part of what Coach Tomic has brought to the Falcons.”
Hohl, a Waterville, Ohio native, comes to Bowling Green after spending a year as a graduate assistant coach at Arkansas State. The program went 21-10 and won the Sun Belt Conference West Division championship, going undefeated at home. Hohl earned her bachelors degree in retailing from Michigan State in December of 2007 after leading the Spartans to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2007. She was named Academic All-Big Ten and was an AAU All-American while playing club volleyball with Glass City Volleyball Club.
“Jessica is another young up-and-coming coach who is a perfect addition to our staff,” Tomic said. “She is a great role model for our student-athletes because, as an Ohio native, she competed and was successful at the highest levels in college and professionally. With her athleticism and the fact that she is not too far removed from competitive volleyball, Jessica will help us raise the level of competitiveness in practice when necessary.”
Hohl also played club volleyball with Premier Volleyball Club and Toledo Volleyball Club. Upon graduation from Michigan State, she played professionally for Ok Calcit in Kamnik, Slovenia, where her team was among the final 16 teams vying for the CEV Cup. She also played for CV Miranda in Spain in 2010 and her team placed second in the regular season.
“I am elated to be part of the Falcon family and volleyball staff under Coach Tomic,” Hohl said. “With the coaching staff finally here, it will be a great atmosphere. I am really excited to be back in the area I grew up as I believe the MAC and the Midwest has some of the strongest volleyball around.”
Laurent has been named the program's first Coordinator of Volleyball Operations and was chosen from within. She has been volunteering in Bowling Green's Student-Athlete Services Department since August of 2011. Laurent received her bachelors degree in psychology from Texas A&M in 2004 and her masters degree in human performance from Alabama in 2008. She has a wealth of coaching and media relations experience.
“Lindsay has been instrumental in my smooth transition to BGSU because she has been with me from day one,” Tomic said. “She brings a wealth of experience and invaluable set of skills from the many positions she's held throughout her career. She has already made our program better and I feel very fortunate to have her as our Coordinator of Volleyball Operations.”
Laurent was a defensive specialist at Texas A&M in 2003 and 2004 and has coached for various club teams. She was an intern in the Texas A&M Athletics Business Office in 2006-07 and was a sports information intern at Alabama from 2007-09. She served as an assistant men's and women's volleyball coach at St. Ambrose from 2009-11.
“I am excited for the opportunity to be a part of Coach Tomic's staff and to represent BGSU volleyball as well as the Athletics department,” Laurent said.
