The Falcons are 3-3 on the season after suffering a 5-2 loss to Louisville last weekend. BGSU sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland picked up BGSU's wins, winning at the first and third singles flights, respectively.
Reuland paces the Falcons with 16 singles wins and 30 overall victories this season. Chiricosta, a Cleveland-area native (Avon Lake), picked up her 14th single win of the year against UL, and has 27 total wins to tie for third on the team.
Cleveland State is 5-3 in dual matches this season, and the Vikings have won three consecutive contests. Last weekend, CSU picked up a trio of wins, including victories over MAC schools Ball State and Toledo. The Vikings' Nicole Janek was named the Horizon League's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Monday (Feb. 21).
Last season, CSU went 13-12 and finished 7-1 in HL play. Head coach Brian Etzkin is in his 10th season at the Viking helm.
There are a number of similarities between BGSU and CSU. Both the Falcons and Vikings have seven players on the roster. Both programs have just one senior (Jessica Easdale for BGSU, Catrine Bjerrehus for CSU) and no freshmen among those seven student-athletes.
BGSU holds a 6-0 lead over Cleveland State in the all-time series, including a 7-0 win at the Perrysburg Tennis Center last season (Jan. 28, 2011). The Falcons posted a 5-2 win in Cleveland two seasons ago (Feb. 26, 2010), and picked up a 7-0 victory over the Vikings the previous year (Jan. 23, 2009) in BG's first-ever match at the PTC.
The teams have crossed paths on several occasions this season, as CSU participated in the BGSU Invitational in September, and both the Falcons and Vikings headed to Columbus for the ITA Midwest Regional one month later. BGSU competitors went 1-2 in singles and 1-1 in doubles play vs. the Vikes in the fall.
The teams have one common opponent in dual-match play to date, as both have faced Michigan State. The Falcons lost by a narrow 4-3 count in East Lansing on Feb. 10, six days after CSU suffered a 5-2 road setback to the Spartans.
Following the CSU match, the Falcons will have several weeks before the next competitions. BGSU will head to Las Vegas, Nev., to face Houston (March 18) and Kansas (March 19) on back-to-back days. Those will be the final matches before the Mid-American Conference opener, as the Brown and Orange will host Northern Illinois on March 24.
The non-conference dual will be held at the Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio.
