Falcons Down Eastern Michigan in Tune-Up for MAC Championships

The Bowling Green State University gymnastics teams picked up a win Saturday night, defeating the Eastern Michigan Eagles 193.675-190.950 inside Anderson Arena on Senior Day.
The win snapped a 14-match Mid-American Conference losing streak. BGSU's last conference win was on Feb. 21, 2010, also versus Eastern Michigan.
It may have been senior day, but a freshman stole the show. Jamilah Ali scored a career-best 38.975 in the all-around to finish first among all competitors. Ali added two more first-place finishes, capturing top honors on vault (9.850) and beam (9.800), while adding a fourth-place finish on bars (9.650) and a tenth-place finish on floor (9.675).
As a team the Falcons' 193.675 was its third highest score of the season.
BGSU began the day on vault, recording a 48.325, compared to a 48.225 for EMU (on bars) to open with a small lead through one rotation. As mentioned before, Ali won the event, while Danille Wishart (9.750) and Lacey Swords (9.675) finished third and fourth.
Rotation two is where the Falcons made their move, opening up a substantial lead on the Eagles. BGSU scored a season-best 48.525 on bars, while EMU struggled on vault, scoring a 47.150. Junior Monica Eaton was outstanding, winning the event with a 9.800. Freshman Amanda Lievendag was not far off the pace, finishing second with a 9.775.
Ali, Eaton and Harrington captured the top three spots in the meet on beam. Ali's 9.800 won the event, with Eaton and Megan Harrington finishing tied for second with 9.650's
The Falcons put the finishing touches on an outstanding meet, scoring a 48.725 on the floor exercise. Wishart finished second and Harrington was third with a 9.800 and 9.775.
Bowling Green will return to action on Sat., March 24, as they will compete in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships, held in DeKalb, Ill.
