Box Score
The Bowling Green State University baseball team jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday afternoon, scoring all six runs in the first two frames, on the way to a 6-2 win over Shawnee State. Trevor Blaylock was the winning pitcher, which was the first of his season and career. Nick Bruns got the save, the third of the season, to help the Falcons improve to 8-12.
The Falcons got off to a good start offensively, as Jake Thomas led off the bottom of the first with a single. After Brandon Howard was hit by a pitch, Andrew Kubuski was walked. The following batter, T.J. Losby was hit by a pitch for an RBI, and Shawnee State starting pitcher Carter Bledsoe's day was done. Bledsoe received the loss for the game. Matt Pitzulo would single through the right side to put the Falcons up 3-0, all with nobody out in the first. Patrick Lancaster scored the fourth run of the inning, as the Falcons led 4-0 after just one inning.
The Falcons would get two more runs in the second off of Bear reliever Xander Uxley, as Jake Thomas and Brandon Howard would cross home plate for the Falcons. Both runs, however, were unearned, as Shawnee State shortstop Adam Wamsley made two errors in the inning. After just two innings, the Falcons led 6-0, and it appeared the route was on.
Freshman starter Trevor Blaylock would give way to Kevin Delapaz after just two innings, as Blaylock struck out three in two innings, receiving the win. Delapaz would allow a hit in his inning of work, but would retire the runner with a double play.
The Bears would creep back into the game a little bit with two unearned runs in the fourth against freshman Jason Link, and grab another run off Chris Miller in the fifth. After five innings, the Falcons led 6-3. That would be the end of the scoring in the game, as pitching would take over the rest of the way for both teams, as nobody crossed home plate after the fifth inning at Warren E. Steller Field on Wednesday.
Patrick Martin pitched the sixth for the Falcons, striking out the side. Jake Overbeck pitched the seventh for Bowling Green, shutting the Bears down one-two-three. Setup man Ben Singer came on to pitch the eighth, allowing two hits, but getting out of the inning with the help of a double play. Nick Bruns would enter the game in the ninth inning, shutting down the Bears in order for his third save of the season.
The Falcons threw eight pitchers in Wednesday's game, while playing 13 position players in preparation for Mid-American Conference play, which begins on Friday. The Falcons will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a three game set with the Broncos of Western Michigan to open league play this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3 pm.
