With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-5 in dual matches this season. The Huskies drop to 7-7 overall, and NIU is now 0-2 in MAC action.
BGSU was in control from the start of the match, capturing all three doubles matches and going on to win each of the six singles flights as well. All seven players on coach Penny Dean's roster won at least one match, with five of the seven players winning at both singles and doubles.
In doubles play, juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson picked up the Falcons' first win of the day at the third flight. The duo, teaming up for the third time in their BGSU careers but the second time in the last three matches, downed NIU's team of Stephanie McDonald and Haley Dekkinga by an 8-3 outcome.
Two more juniors, Katie Grubb and co-captain Maddy Eccleston, were victorious at flight number two, posting an 8-5 win over the Huskies' Arantza De La Torre and Nelle Youel. The Eccleston/Grubb duo, like Hill and Johnson, were playing together for just the second time this season. Eccleston and Grubb are now 2-0 as a duo, both this season and in their BG careers.
At the top flight, sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland posted an 8-4 win over Northern's team of Sara McLaughlin and Emily Rogers. Chiricosta and Reuland are 2-0 this season and 10-5 as a duo in their respective BGSU tenures.
When singles play began, both Eccleston and Reuland made quick work of their opponents. At the top flight, Eccleston dropped only one game against McLaughlin, closing out her straight-sets win with startling efficiency.
At the third flight, Reuland matched Eccleston's feat with a 6-0 win in her opening set. Northern's Rogers did win three games in the second set, but it was not enough to prevent the Falcon sophomore from rolling along to victory.
Hill was the next Falcon off the court, downing De La Torre in the minimum two sets at the fourth flight. In each of the remaining three singles matches, BGSU and NIU would split the opening two sets.
At flight number six, senior co-captain Jessica Easdale downed McDonald, but saw her Huskie opponent roar back for a second-set victory. Easdale, however, surged past McDonald by a 6-2 count in the decisive third set.
At the second flight, Chiricosta and Youel split two lengthy sets, with each winning by a 6-4 score. Chiricosta dropped the opening set, but bounced back for a victory to force a third set. With several of her teammates having won and the Falcons having earned the required four points for victory, Chiricosta and Youel played a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, with the BG soph coming up with a 10-4 win.
Mere seconds after Chiricosta's final point, Grubb recorded the winning shot in a three-set match against Mary Malkin. Grubb won her first set at the fifth flight, 6-2, but saw Malkin respond with a 6-4 victory. The third set was tight throughout, but Grubb pulled it out by a 7-5 result.
The Falcons now lead NIU, 13-11, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has won eight consecutive matches over the Huskies.
Saturday's match, believe it or not, was the Falcons' first dual match at Keefe Courts in nearly two years. Last season saw BGSU play four April matches at the Perrysburg Tennis Center due to precipitation, high winds and/or forecasts for precipitation and high winds.
The Falcons host two more MAC foes next weekend. BGSU meets Buffalo Friday (March 30) and defending conference champion Akron Saturday (March 31), with both duals set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
