BGSU faces Eastern Michigan, Toledo this weekend
The Bowling Green State University tennis team makes a pair of short trips north this weekend, concluding the regular-season schedule in the process. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will face Eastern Michigan University in Friday (April 20) action, then will meet the University of Toledo on Saturday afternoon (April 21). Both Mid-American Conference duals are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Friday's EMU match is scheduled to be held at the Chippewa Racquet Club. Saturday's BGSU-UT dual is slated to be played at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, Saturday's match would be moved to a 3:30 p.m. start and would be held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee.
The Falcons enter the weekend with an overall dual-match record of 8-8, and BGSU is 3-3 in MAC play. BG could finish as high as the third seed or as low as the seventh for the MAC Championships.
Currently, BGSU is tied for fourth in the nine-team league. Western Michigan, like the Falcons, enters the weekend with a 3-3 conference mark. The Broncos, however, hold the tiebreaker over BG by virtue of a 4-3 win over the Brown and Orange at Keefe Courts last weekend. The match was the closest in the BGSU-WMU series in nearly 14 years.
BGSU won all three doubles matches vs. Western, but the Broncos rallied to capture four singles contests to take the match. The Falcons' doubles teams consisted of sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland at the top flight, juniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb at the second level, and juniors Jade Johnson and Mary Hill at flight number three.
Both the Chiricosta/Reuland team and the Hill/Johnson duo have won four-straight matches and six of the last seven contests. Grubb and Eccleston have picked up three wins in a row, and the Falcons' doubles teams have combined for a 14-4 record in MAC play. Hill/Johnson and Chiricosta/Reuland each are 5-1, while the Grubb/Eccleston duo is 4-2.
BGSU has won the doubles point in four consecutive duals, in six of the last seven matches and in 11 of this season's 16 contests to date. The Falcons have captured all three doubles matches in three-straight duals, and BG has done so six times this spring.
In singles action, Chiricosta (top flight) and Reuland (third flight) each picked up wins against WMU. Chiricosta was dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maria Nivia.
Reuland enters the EMU match with a team-leading 45 wins this year to date. Her 45-15 record includes a 22-8 singles mark and a 23-7 doubles ledger. Reuland leads the Falcons in both singles and doubles victories.
Reuland has won eight consecutive matches, having picked up victories in both singles and doubles in each of the last four contests. Her total of 45 combined wins moves her into a tie for 10th place on the BGSU single-season list.
With 22 singles victories this season, Reuland is now deadlocked for 16th on that BG list. And, her 23 doubles wins tie her for 11th in school history.
Chiricosta now has 41 total wins this season, with a 20-9 singles record and a 21-9 doubles mark. She is second on the team in singles wins and is deadlocked for second on the Falcons in doubles victories. Chiricosta now has 94 career wins at BGSU, ranking her 25th on the school list. With 48 singles wins, she is now deadlocked for 22nd in BG history on that chart.
Eccleston, with over a year remaining in her BGSU career, is tied for 11th in doubles wins (68), deadlocked for 15th in overall wins (126) and ranks 18th in singles victories (58).
Hill now has 90 total wins at BGSU, and is tied for 26th in BG annals. Reuland and senior Jessica Easdale each are one singles win away from moving into the top 25 on that list, as both have 45 to date.
Eastern Michigan has an overall record of 8-13 and a MAC mark of 4-2. The Eagles enter the weekend ranked third in the conference, behind only Miami (7-0 MAC) and Akron (6-1). Last weekend, the Eagles split a pair of road matches, losing, 6-1, at UA before bouncing back for a 4-3 victory at Buffalo. A year ago, head coach Ryan Ray's team went 10-13 overall and 3-5 in MAC action.
Toledo is 9-10 overall, and the Rockets have a league ledger of 2-4 heading into a Friday match vs. WMU. Like EMU, UT went on the road and split a pair of matches last weekend, with a 4-3 win over UB and a 7-0 loss at UA. Toledo has played each of the last four matches with just five players, and the Rockets have won two of those four contests. Last season, head coach Tracy Mauntler's club went 13-10 overall and 4-4 in the MAC.
BGSU trail Eastern Michigan, 27-12, in the all-time series between the teams, but BG picked up a 4-3 home victory last year, coming back after losing the doubles point at the Perrysburg Tennis Center (April 15, 2011). Two years ago, the Eagles won by an identical 4-3 score in Ypsilanti (April 10, 2010). Four of the last five regular-season matches between BGSU and EMU have ended by 4-3 scores.
BGSU leads UT, 24-16, in that series, and the Falcons have won the last two meetings. Last season, the Brown and Orange pulled out a 4-3 home win in the regular-season meeting (April 16, 2011), then blanked the Rockets, 4-0, in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals in Ypsilanti, Mich. (April 29, 2011). The last road match in the series saw the Rockets pick up a narrow 4-3 victory (April 9, 2010).
As mentioned, this weekend's matches will bring the regular season to a close. Following the UT match, the Falcons will prepare for the MAC Championships, which run from Thursday through Sunday, April 26-29, in DeKalb, Ill.
