Kelsey Bates To Transfer To BGSU
May 23, 2012 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced that Kelsey Bates will transfer from Syracuse University to BGSU. The daughter of Talan and Donna Bates, she will be able to play for the Falcons immediately and has three years of eligibility remaining.
“We are very excited that Kelsey has chosen BGSU to continue her collegiate career,” Tomic said. “She is an outstanding student-athlete who comes from a great family. Kelsey brings size, athleticism and an ability to play more than one position. She will add depth to our middle blocker and right side positions.”
A native of Willshire, Ohio, Bates holds the Parkway High School record for kill percentage at 47.8 percent, with 325 kills and 68 solo blocks as a senior. She was a third-team All-Ohio Division III in 2010 and was named first-team All-MAC and a District 8 All-Star as both a junior and senior. She led Parkway to the semifinals at the state championship as a senior captain.
At 6-foot-1, Bates played in six matches during her freshman season at Syracuse in 2011. She posted four blocks to go with a kill and a dig, recording two of those blocks against Siena. She also had a kill and a block against Youngstown State and a dig and a block against Cincinnati.
Bates is the first player to commit to first-year head coach Tomic. The Falcons return five starters and the starting libero, to go with nine returning letterwinners, from a team that went 19-12 a year ago. The team set a school record by opening the season with 12 consecutive victories and made an 11-win improvement over the 2010 season.
