Bowling Green, Ohio – A record total of 534 college and high school men's and women's volleyball teams were recognized with American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award honors, and the Bowling Green volleyball program earned the award for the 12th consecutive year, tying for second-longest string among all NCAA Division I schools.
The AVCA Team Academic Award was instituted in 1993 and honors teams with a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average or better.
“This is truly a testament to our team for the hard work they put into the classroom,” BGSU volleyball coach Danijela Tomic said. “One of our team goals every year is to receive the AVCA Academic Award and we are proud that we accomplished that goal this year to continue the tradition of academic excellence in this program.”
Through the spring semester, BGSU has two volleyball student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and another eight with a 3.3 or better.
Bowling Green's string of 12 consecutive years earning the honor is tied with Toledo and Denver for second-place among active streaks. Indiana State leads NCAA Division I by being recognized 14 straight years.
In all, Bowling Green has earned the award 13 times in the 20-year history of the program, fourth-most in Division I. Morehead State, Indiana State, and Nebraska have all been awarded 14 times, followed by BGSU, with Toledo, Eastern Michigan, and Denver earning the title 12 times each.
