Bloomington, Ind. – Coming off of an intense four-set victory over Indiana, the Bowling Green volleyball team was unable to start a winning streak, losing to Cleveland State 25-17, 25-22, 25-13. With the loss BGSU goes 1-2 at the Indiana Invitational and falls to 1-4 on the season.
The Falcons struggled throughout the match and hit just .087 for the match. Cleveland State, on the other hand, hit .305 and posted eight blocks.
Bowling Green's best opportunity came in the second set as a Leah Shaw kill cut Cleveland State's lead to one at 22-21. But a kill and a block put Cleveland State back up by three and the Vikings held on for the 25-22 win.
Danielle Tonyan led Bowling Green with eight kills and Paige Penrod added seven. Penrod also had two aces, while Kaitlyn Skinner had four blocks.
“Unfortunately, we were not able to repeat our Indiana performance against an excellent Cleveland State team,” head coach Danijela Tomic said. “They outplayed us in every aspect of the game. Our serve receive broke down and with that our offense broke down. We will learn from this loss and start preparing for our next tough tournament at BYU.”
Following the tournament, Skinner was named to the all-tournament team. She hit .269 on the weekend and posted a team-best 12 blocks, an average of 1.09 per set.
Cleveland State improved to 5-2 with the win. Bowling Green will be off until heading West to play in the BYU Nike Invitational Friday and Saturday.
