January 30, 2013 | Gymnastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team takes on Mid-American Conference rival Kent State on Saturday in the annual Pink Meet, sponsored by Kroger. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness and research.
Free raffle tickets will be distributed at the door for an iPad giveaway during the meet. Students in attendance will also be able to take advantage of free pizza and drinks.
The Falcons are coming off an impressive win at Eastern Michigan with a season-high 194.025. Bowling Green gymnasts recorded 13 career-best scores in the meet en route to the highest team score since 2010.
"After the excitement of last week's win, I am hoping to build on the momentum," said head coach Kerrie Beach. "I expect Kent to have big routines and they will be prepared to hit all those little details. Much of our training this week has been focused on sticking landings and hitting in pressure situations during practice."
Against Eastern, Amanda Lievendag won her third-straight uneven bars title with a career-high 9.85, leading BGSU to a 49.000 total on the event. Jamilah Ali nailed her vault for a winning 9.85, helping her retain a No. 1 ranking in the MAC on the event. Alyssa Nocella tied for the win on balance beam and Megan Harrington captured her first all-around title of the season.
Last week, Kent State claimed a tri-meet victory against Western Michigan and George Washington with a score of 194.675. Marie Case, the MAC's top all-around gymnast, led the Flashes and claimed three individual titles in the win on beam (9.8), floor (9.925) and the all-around (39.200).
"There is just a lot of excitement centered around this competition and I am looking forward to improving our team score this weekend," Beach said.
The showdown between the Falcons and the Flashes is scheduled for 4 p.m. Admission to Anderson Arena is free.
