Falcons To Compete In Akron Invitational This Weekend

Akron, Ohio – The Bowling Green track and field team heads to Akron this weekend to compete in the Akron Invitational Friday and Saturday. The non-scored meet begins at 3 p.m. Friday and picks up again at 9 a.m. Saturday. This will be the Falcons' first meet on an oversized track as the team prepares for the postseason.

LAST TIME OUT
BGSU dominated the sprints and won four events overall at home in the Tom Wright Classic this past Friday. Allison Weimer won the 400, just missing the automatic qualifying mark for the MAC Indoor Championships, in 57.67 seconds and anchored the winning 1600 relay team. Berrion Berry posted a strong 7.86 in the 60 for the victory and Allorian Horne won the 200 in 25.83. Natalie Sommerville, Felicia Jefferson and Brittany Sinclair joined Weimer on the 1600 relay team that won the meet in 3:56.97.
PERSONAL BESTS
In Bowling Green's season-opening meet, the Falcons set or tied 23 personal records at the Eagle Holiday Meet. Following that meet, the team set or tied 21 personal bests in the Bowling Green Opener this past weekend. At the Harvey-Simmons Invitational, the team added another 14 personal bests before recording 19 last week at the Tom Wright Classic.

YOUTH MOVEMENT
Currently, BGSU is ranked in the top 20 in the MAC in an individual event 12 times. Those 12 student-athletes represent three freshmen (or redshirt freshmen), four sophomores (or redshirt sophomores), three juniors (or redshirt juniors) and two seniors.
PLEGER REMAINS UNBEATEN
Sophomore Brook Pleger continues to obliterate her personal best and remains unbeaten in the weight throw this year. She opened the indoor season by setting her career best with a toss of 59-feet-8.25 to win the Eagles Holiday Meet, hosted by Eastern Michigan. In that meet, she met the automatic qualifying mark for the Indoor MAC Championships. She followed that up by winning the Bowling Green Opener with a throw of 61-7 and then posted a distance of 61-10.25 to win the Harvey-Simmons Invitational. Pleger had the weekend off last week but will be back in action at the Akron Invitational.
WEIMER VAULTS INTO CONTENTION IN 400
Senior Allison Weimer used the final indoor home meet of her career to move into the top 10 in the Mid-American Conference in the 400. With a race-winning time of 56.92 (converted from 57.67), she ranks seventh in the conference in the event. Her previous career best in the 400 came a week earlier in the Harvey-Simmons Invitational with a converted time of 57.75.
BREAKING THE EIGHT SECOND “BERRY”ER
Freshman Berrion Berry won the 60 at the Tom Wright Classic with a time of 7.86 seconds. It was the second consecutive week in which she set a new personal best and the first time she has posted a time faster than eight seconds. A week earlier, she ran 8.01 at the Harvey-Simmons Invitational.
LEAPS AND BOUNDS
While sophomore Krystin Reiser has not yet qualified for the MAC Indoor Championships in the long jump, she set a new personal best in each of the team's first three meets. She opened with a leap of 15-feet-5.5, improved to 15-7.5 and jumped 15-9 at the Harvey-Simmons Invitational. Reiser did not compete in the long jump this past weekend at the Tom Wright Classic.
TAYLOR MAKING STRIDES
True freshman Demetra Taylor continues to push her time in the 60 hurdles to new levels. In her first collegiate meet, she ran the event in 9.19 seconds and then improved to 9.15 in the BGSU Opener prelims. She followed that up with a time of 9.13 at the Harvey-Simmons Invitational and then rolled to a 9.05 in the Tom Wright Classic. She is now just .03 seconds from breaking into the top 20 in the MAC.
NEW FACES
Second-year head coach Lou Snelling announced the addition of two new assistant coach in October. James Gildon works primarily with the team's jump, sprint and hurdle groups, while McKayla Plank assists with both the cross country and track and field programs. Gildon comes to BGSU after serving as an assistant coach at Fort Hayes State University, while Plank was a standout distance runner at Georgia.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
The BGSU track and field team has been named a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for each of the past six years. The Falcons had a 3.24 combined grade point average to earn the award in 2012, fifth-best among MAC schools.
