2013-14 Season Preview
The Bowling Green State University swim team has its final preseason test Friday (Oct. 4), as the Falcons welcome Mid-American Conference rivals Toledo and Akron, along with Youngstown State and Findlay, for the annual Tom Stubbs Relays. The meet will be held at Fremont Ross High School (Fremont, Ohio) beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The meet features a series of ten relays, including the 200 and 400 medley relay, 3x100 butterfly, 3x100 backstroke, 3x100 breaststroke, 3x500 freestyle, 4x100 individual medley and the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays. Schools will have the opportunity to enter multiple teams for each race.
The contest gives this year's team its first chance to swim against opposing teams, after racing in the Orange versus Brown intrasquad meet late last month. Members of the winning team this season were Joëlle Scheps, Emily Waller, Hannah Newman, Maya Skorupski, Emma Kiefer, Brittany Szekely, Stephanie Boyle, Kristin Filby, Kayla Effinger, Nicole Hranchook, and Hannah Albion.
Â
"I was happy with the way that we functioned as a team—we were racing hard and we were very attentive to all the different aspects of taking care of business that we will see during any official meet," head coach Petra Martin said about the Orange and Brown intrasquad meet.
Â
The Falcons will look to continue building off last year's success, which saw them improve to third place at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Last year at the Tom Stubbs Relays, the Falcons set multiple meet records en route to claiming eight event victories on the day. Bowling Green placed first in the 200 and 400 medley relays, the 3x100 backstroke, 3x100 breaststroke and the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle relays. Meet records were set by the Falcons in the 3x100 backstroke, 800 free relay and 400 medley relay.
The young Falcons raced in their first intrasquad test last week - the annual Orange versus Brown exhibition. The Brown team would go on to post a come-from-behind, 111-110 victory. Â
The Falcons open the regular season on Saturday, October 26, when they travel to Eastern Michigan University. That meet is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
