Volleyball Building For The Future With Signing Class

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced the signing of four student-athletes. Katie Scholten, Michaela Gabanic and Nicole Slimko will all begin at BGSU in the fall of 2014. Paige O'Connor will begin at Bowling Green during the spring, getting an early jump on college.

"We are thrilled to add four very talented Falcons to our 2014 roster," Tomic said. "These student-athletes embody what we strive for here at BGSU and that is a commitment to academics and competitive athletics. All four of them bring a lot of athleticism and competitive high school and club volleyball experience, which will fit perfectly to our team culture. Moreover, they are great people coming from great families and have very bright futures awaiting them here at BGSU."
The four newcomers will join a BGSU volleyball program that is one of the premier programs in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons won the 2012 MAC Tournament Championship, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Scholten, a setter from St. Louis, Mo., is the daughter of Greg and Kathy Scholten. At 6-foot tall, Scholten guided Visitation Academy to a 30-6-1 record and a second place district finish in her senior season. She was an all-district first team choice and was also named to the academic All-State team all four years of her high school career. Scholten tallied over 1,300 assists throughout her tenured career and also competed in the USA Volleyball High Performance program from 2010-13. She competed at the A1 level, the National Training Team level, in 2010 and 2013, while competing at the A2 level, the National Invitational Team Progam, in 2011 and 2012. She also competes for St. Louis Cyc Volleyball Club. Scholten is a National Junior Honor Society member and plans to major in occupational therapy.
Gabanic, a right side hitter from Avon Lake, Ohio, is the daughter of Tom and Colleen Gabanic. Standing 6-foot-1, she helped her team at Magnificat High School to an 18-win season and a district runner-up finish in 2013. Gabanic was named to the all-district first team and was nominated for Player of the Year at the conclusion of her senior season, earning third team All-Ohio honors. She plans to major in actuary and plays club for Maverick Volleyball.Â
O'Connor, an outside hitter from Ada, Mich., stands 6-0 and is the daughter of Dan and Faith O'Connor. A four-year varsity player at Forest Hills Northern, she was a four-year all-conference, three-year all-region and 2012 third team All-State selection. She was also one of ten finalists for MIVCA Miss Volleyball in 2013. O'Connor played club volleyball for the Saints Juniors and Michigan Volleyball Academy, where she helped her teams to a record five AAU Michigan Open Championships at the 13, 15, 16 and 18 Open age groups. She plans to major in life sciences.

Slimko, an outside hitter from Crystal Lake, Ill., is the daughter of Mark and Dana Slimko. At 6-0, she is a two-time all-area player at Crystal Lake South High School as well as being named team most valuable player as a sophomore. She was also all-conference as a junior with senior announcements yet to be made. Slimko will lead her team into the Illinois state semifinals this weekend. In club, she plays for Sky High Volleyball Club. She plans to major in chemistry with future aspirations of becoming a pediatric oncologist.
