Three Falcons Honored On All-Conference Teams
November 21, 2013 | Volleyball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University seniors Lindsey Butterfield and Kaitlyn Skinner were named to the MAC All-Conference Teams and Jelena Sunjic was named to the MAC All-Freshman team, as released by the MAC today in voting of the league's 12 head coaches. Butterfield earned first team all-league honors for the second consecutive year and Skinner was named second team all-conference for the first time in her career.
Despite missing three matches during conference play due to injury, Butterfield earned her second first team all-league honor. The Falcons went 9-4 in MAC play with her in the lineup and only 1-2 without. She currently ranks sixth in the MAC with 3.35 kills per set in league action and hit a team-best .246 with 11 service aces. She is also one of five players on the team to average at least 2.00 digs per set (at 2.08) and has added 24 blocks. She had two 20-kill matches in conference action, including 25 in a five-set win at Miami. Butterfield is just as impressive off the court as she was a 2013 Senior CLASS Award Candidate with a 3.824 grade point average in biology.
Skinner, a two-time MAC East Defensive Player of the Week, earned second team all-conference honors and ranks among the top 20 in the country in blocks, leading the MAC with 1.45 per set. She posted at least four blocks in 15 of the team's 16 league matches and is also hitting .234. Skinner had 10 kills without an error on 18 attacks in a Senior Night victory over Kent State.
Sunjic was named to the MAC All-Freshman team after averaging 2.84 kills per set, which ranks just outside the top 10 in the league. In conference play, she ranks second on the Falcons in both kills and blocks and had double-digit kill totals in 10 of the 15 MAC matches she played in. Sunjic had a career-high 22 kills in a five-set home victory over Miami and added 18 kills and seven blocks in a critical road win at Ball State.
Bowling Green went 14-14 during the regular season and 10-6 in MAC play, earning the league's No. 4 seed for the MAC Tournament, which begins Friday at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Falcons are the defending MAC Tournament champions and will play last year's runner-up No. 5 seed Northern Illinois Friday at 2 p.m. in the first round.
