Falcons Host Two Ohio Foes at the PTC this Weekend

Friday's CSU match will begin at 12:00 p.m., with Sunday's UC dual set for a 9:30 a.m. start. Both matches will be held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, and admission is free.

The Falcons opened the homestand with a pair of victories last weekend, downing Youngstown State and Evansville by identical 6-1 scores. BGSU won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles battles on each day.
BGSU has swept the three doubles contests in each of the last four dual matches, and the Falcons have won at least five singles matches in all four duals. During the five-match winning streak, the Falcons have a combined record of 27-3 in singles and 14-1 in doubles.
Several Falcons have put together some impressive winning streaks during that time as well. Senior Katie Grubb has won 10 consecutive matches (both singles and doubles), while junior Nikki Chiricosta has nine-straight wins. Senior Jade Johnson has captured her last eight matches, while freshman Katie Brozovich is riding a seven-match winning streak.
Chiricosta is the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, having earned that honor on Wednesday (Feb. 6). Chiricosta picked up her fourth career league P-O-W award after going a perfect 4-0 in last weekend's matches.
In addition to Chiricosta, Grubb also won four matches last weekend. Johnson and fellow senior Mary Hill each had 3-0 records on the weekend, while senior Maddy Eccleston and junior Emily Reuland both went 3-1. Brozovich had a 2-0 mark, while freshman Drew Fillis won the only match she played.
On the season, all eight Falcons have at least 15 total wins, including 10 or more doubles victories. Every player on the team is at least five games over .500.
Chiricosta has a team-best 33-11 overall mark this year, and also leads the Falcons in singles and doubles wins. The Avon Lake, Ohio, native is 15-5 in singles play and 18-6 in doubles action this year to date.
Reuland is right behind with a 31-13 overall mark, including a 14-6 singles record and a 17-7 doubles ledger. Grubb has a 26-9 record this season, having gone 12-5 in singles and 14-4 in doubles to date.
Three other Falcons have won more than 20 matches this season. That list includes Brozovich (24), Eccleston (22) and Johnson (21).
Eccleston, a team co-captain along with Hill, continues to climb several BGSU career lists. She picked up her 84th career doubles victory in Sunday's Evansville match, moving into a tie for second place on that BG list. Eccleston has tied Jenny Cheung (1995-98) on that chart, and is just five doubles wins away from matching Christine Chiricosta's school record. Chiricosta had 89 doubles wins from 2008-11.
Eccleston now has 149 combined career victories, and is part of a four-way tie for third place on that chart. She has equaled the total amassed by three teammates from a decade ago; Abby Bratton, Meghan Rhodes and Erika Wasilewski (1998-2001). Christine Chiricosta holds the BGSU record with 178 total wins as a Falcon.
Several other Falcons reached milestones last weekend. Reuland now has 120 overall wins, while Johnson hit the 90-win mark. Grubb picked up her 60th career doubles win on Saturday vs. YSU and her 50th singles victory the following day against UE.
All four BGSU seniors and both Falcon juniors are on the list of the top-30 players in school history in combined career wins. All six players are ranked 22nd or higher on the school's doubles wins list, while five of the six are among the top-25 all-time Falcons in singles wins. Cleveland State enters Friday's match with a dual-match record of 1-3 on the season. The Vikings split a pair of road matches last weekend, downing Toledo, 4-3 on Friday (Feb. 1) before falling to Michigan State by a 7-0 count the following day. Friday's BGSU match will be the fifth-straight road contest to begin the dual-match season for the Vikings, who also have faced Harvard and Boston University. A year ago, CSU finished 16-9 overall and 7-1 in the Horizon League, and the team advanced to the championship match of the league tournament for the second consecutive year before losing to UIC.
Cincinnati is 0-3, having faced some tough competition in the early going. The Bearcats' dual matches have come against Indiana, Ohio State and Miami. UC faces Toledo on Saturday (Feb. 9) before meeting the Falcons the folowing morning. Last year, the 'Cats had an overall record of 8-17 and a Big East mark of 3-5.
BGSU is a perfect 7-0 all-time in dual matches vs. Cleveland State, including a 6-0 record under Penny Dean. The teams have met in each of the last four years, including twice at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Last year, the Brown and Orange picked up a 5-2 win on the road over the Vikings (Feb. 25, 2012). Two seasons ago at the PTC, the Falcons came away with a 7-0 win (Jan. 28, 2011). BG's first-ever match at the Perrysburg venue came against Cleveland State, as the Falcons won a 7-0 decision on Jan. 23, 2009.
BGSU leads Cincinnati, 20-11, in that series, and the Falcons are 13-8 vs. the Bearcats since Dean assumed the helm. BG has won five consecutive series meetings after UC had captured six of the previous seven duals. The Falcons are 2-0 vs. the Bearcats at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, including a 5-2 victory two seasons ago (Feb. 5, 2011). Last year, the Brown and Orange headed to the Queen City and picked up a 6-1 decision (Jan. 27, 2012).
The Falcons have crossed paths with each of this season's opponents already this season. Cincinnati joined BGSU in the season-opening Muirfield Collegiate Invitational in Dublin, Ohio (Sept. 14-16, 2012). The following weekend, both UC and Cleveland State came to Northwest Ohio to participate in the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 21-22).
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will next take the court on Feb. 22, hosting IPFW at the PTC. The seven-match homestand also includes matches vs. California (Pa.) on Feb. 24 and Butler on March 16.
