April 17, 2013 | Women's Golf
Date: Saturday, April 20 (8:30 a.m. shotgun start)
Location: Glendarin Hills Golf Club (Angola, Ind.)
Course Info: Par 72, 6,142 yards
Format: One day, 36 holes, continuous play
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team, coming off a third-place finish at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, will look to build momentum heading into the Mid-American Conference Championships with a one-day event at the Angola Shootout. Ball State University will be the host of the event on April 20.
The event, which will feature 36 holes of continues play, will be the final tune-up prior to the MAC Championships, hosted by Ohio University in Nashport, Ohio at Longaberger Golf Club on April 26-28.
When BGSU takes the course they will get a strong look at its competition for the following week. While just seven team will be competing on Saturday, six of them will be from the MAC. The teams are: Ball State, Akron, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan.
Below are a few notes on the team.
Setting Records
BGSU will enter Saturday's action with a team scoring average of 309.95, which will in all likely-hood set a new school record for lowest team scoring average in a season. The current BGSU record is 318.57, set last season. The team also has two tournament victories this season, which is just the third time in BGSU history that feat has been accomplished. The 1992-93 team won three tournaments that year, while the 2005-06 Falcons added two tournament victories that season.
Best Ever?
Junior Bailey Arnold will enter the Angola Shootout with a season scoring average of 77.16, which if the season ended today, would be the lowest single season scoring average in the history of BGSU women's golf. The current record is held by Shelly Binzel, who averaged 78.35 during the 2002-03 season.
Adding to the Record Books
When the season ends, Arnold may in fact rank at the top of the BGSU scoring list, but she won't be the only Falcon to post her name into the record books. If the season ended today Shelby Wilson would rank second in school history with a scoring average of 78.16. Amy Ruthenberg would be third (78.56), followed by Patricia Holt (78.56, 4th), Lily Bartell (78.54, 5th) and Hannah Lewis (79.71, 9th).
Coach of the Year Candidate?
A BGSU women's golf coach has never been named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year. Could that possibly change in 2012-13? Head coach Stephanie Young and the Falcons have two tournament wins in 2012-13 and three runner-up finishes. The Falcons have also finished third, fourth and fifth in a tournament and captured the Ohio Cup for the second consecutive year with a 7-5 win over Ohio. BGSU has finished in the top-5 in eight of nine tournaments this season.
According the www.mac-sports.com the Falcons rank fourth in the league in scoring average, less than three shots behind the University of Toledo. BGSU is third in the MAC in top-10 finishes and is just one of three league schools to win a tournament this season.
