Redshirt junior tosses a career-high ten innings in the game two win
Boxscores: Game 1 | Game 2
ATHENS, Ohio--Mike Frank tossed all ten innings in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, as the Bowling Green State University baseball team earned a split on the road at Ohio. Both games of the double-dip took extra innings, as both were decided in 10 frames. In game one, Ohio got the walkoff win, earning a 4-3 victory over the Orange and Brown. In the second game, the Falcons would score five times in the top of the tenth, winning 7-2. With the split, the Falcons are now 17-26 overall, 11-12 in the Mid-American Conference.
In the first game, the Falcons would fall behind 2-0 after a two-run bottom of the second from Ohio. Cody Apthorpe got the ball to start the game, going 5.2 innings and allowing just three earned runs. The Falcons would hand Apthorpe a lead in the fifth, scoring three times with two outs to take over the lead, at 3-2.
However, the Falcons would not be able to hold the lead, as Ohio came right back just an inning later, tying the game at three runs a piece.
The Falcons had plenty of opportunities to win the first game, as they recorded 12 hits but also left 12 runners on base. Four Falcons - T.J. Losby, Jeremy Shay, Patrick Lancaster, and Brandon Howard - recorded two hits each in the game.
Junior Ethan McKenney would escape a jam in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, as Ohio put two runners in scoring position with just one out in the inning. McKenney would force Bobcat batters into two straight groundouts, stranding the runners at second and third.
The Falcons would strand a runner in the top of the tenth, before Ohio capitalized to win the game with a walk-off single in the home half.
Game two would start off with a bang for the Falcons, as Matt Pitzulo led off the game with a single. After a Losby single and a Lancaster sacrifice bunt, Jesse Rait would eventually deliver with a sacrifice fly to score Pitzulo.
Frank was the story of the day, as he pitched all ten innings in the second game. Frank scattered just four hits in the contest, finishing the game with an unprecedented streak of 21 straight pitches to end the game without delivering a ball. That streak spanned the final seven batters of the game.
For the second straight game, the Falcons and Bobcats played extra innings. The Falcons would not give Ohio any hope in game two, scoring five times in the top of the tenth to put the game away.
The Falcons would sandwich three straight singles in between their first two outs of the tenth inning, before a single, walk, and error broke the game wide open.
The Falcons will look to win their fifth Mid-American Conference series of the season on Sunday, in a rubber match between the two schools beginning at 1 p.m. With the bullpen saved because of Frank's 10-inning performance, Jason Link will be handed the ball to start the game.
