BGSU records season-high 21 hits in first ever meeting between two schools
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team pounded out a season-high 21 hits, defeating Northern Kentucky 13-8 on Tuesday afternoon at Steller Field. With the win, the Falcons improved to 19-26 on the campaign. Bowling Green will host Buffalo this weekend in the final Mid-American Conference series of the regular season. Buffalo enters the weekend in first place, while the Falcons will come in tied for fifth.
In all, 20 Falcons appeared in the contest, with 13 recording at least one hit. Six Falcon hurlers combined to hold the Norse to just six hits in the game.
The Falcons got off to a lead in the bottom of the first, as Matt Pitzulo led off the game with a double into the right-center field gap. After a single by Matt Smith, Patrick Lancaster would beat out a double-play ball for the RBI.
The Falcons continued in the bottom of the second, scoring two more runs in the frame. Brian Bien led off the frame with an infield single. Bien stayed hot on Tuesday, recording three more hits in his five at-bats. He also crossed home plate three times in the game. He would score on a double into the gap off the bat of Jake Thomas. Thomas would eventually score on Aaron Loconsole's sacrifice fly later in the inning.
The Norse would take a brief lead, thanks to two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Just one of the four runs was earned, as the Falcons contributed three errors towards the Norse's offensive cause in the two frames.
The NKU lead was short-lived, as the Orange and Brown exploded for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth. The Falcons would send 11 batters to the dish in the inning, forcing the Norse to turn to the bullpen once again. Due to the disastrous fourth inning by Cody Cooper, he was credited with the loss, falling to 1-4 on the season.
Both teams would fail to score in the fifth inning, as freshman Devin Daugherty continued to excel on the mound. Daugherty was awarded with his first collegiate win on Tuesday, going 2.1 innings without allowing a hit.
The Falcons would add single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings, before tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. NKU would add four runs in the top of the seventh, with just two being earned.
Five Falcons—Jeremy Shay, Alex Davison, Bien, Thomas, and Nick Glanzman—recorded multi-hit games. Although he did not start the game, junior T.J. Losby extended his consecutive games played streak to 99 with a pinch-run appearance in the game. Fred Sharp recorded his first hit of the 2013 campaign in the game, also notching his first career RBI.
With just three games left to play in the regular season, the Falcons will play host to the University at Buffalo beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday's games will start at 1 p.m. Saturday will be Senior Day, with the Falcons honoring Drew Kuns, Sharp, Pitzulo, and Nick Bruns.
