BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team began its final weekend of Mid-American Conference play still searching to secure a bid into the Conference Tournament. With Thursday's 10-4 loss to the University at Buffalo, the importance of the weekend's final two games is magnified. With the loss, the Falcons drop to 19-27 on the campaign, with a record of 12-13 in the Mid-American Conference.
Buffalo jumped out to a 2-0 lead after just an inning and a half. In the first inning, the Bulls scored a single run, with Jason Kanzler crossing the dish. Kanzler had tripled in the inning and was brought home on an RBI groundout by Alex Baldock. In the second, the Bulls struck again, as Mike Burke knocked a two-out single to score the second run.
The Falcons would get a run back in the second, but also missed a golden opportunity to score even more. The Falcons stranded three runners on base, popping up to end the inning. The Orange and Brown left nine runners on base in the game, with seven of those coming in the first four innings.
Bulls' starter Anthony Magovney struggled on Thursday, as he lasted just five innings. Magovney threw nearly 100 pitches in the outing, but thanks to the Buffalo offense it was enough to pick up the win.
The Orange and Brown led 3-2 following a two-run bottom of the third. Two Buffalo errors in the frame helped the Falcons' cause, but after a Jesse Rait double, the Falcons had two runners in scoring position with just one out. Jeremy Shay would tie the game when he scampered home on a wild pitch, and Rait would give the Falcons the lead when he scored on Brian Bien's infield single to the second baseman.
Buffalo would take the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning, thanks to four hits in the inning. Although the Falcons would get one back in the home half of the frame, the Buffalo offense would be uncontainable during the middle three innings.
In total between the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Buffalo scored seven runs on eight hits and two BGSU errors.
The Bulls would outhit the Falcons 14-9 on Thursday afternoon. Following Cody Apthorpe's start, Ethan McKenney would come on and do a nice job in relief. McKenney and Apthorpe both worked 4.1 innings on Thursday, with Devin Daugherty getting the final out in the ninth.
The two teams will continue the series on Friday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Mike Frank will be opposed by Mike McGee on the mound. The series will conclude on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Saturday will be Senior Day with those festivities beginning at 12:45 p.m.
