Complete 2013 BGSU Schedule
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced the 2013 schedule, one which figures to be as tough as any in the program's history. The Falcons will face six non-conference opponents that finished 2012 ranked among the top 25 in the country.
“This is the toughest non-conference schedule that I have ever put together as a coach,” Tomic, in her second season at BGSU and ninth as a head coach, said. “My scheduling philosophy has always been to play the toughest teams that we can because it will help us to grow as a team and prepare us for conference play. Our goal is to get into the top 25 and to do that, we need to schedule and beat some of these ranked teams. I believe we have the team this year to rise to the occasion and be competitive against the tough competition we will face.”
The defending MAC Tournament champions, Bowling Green returns five starters and the libero from a team that went 22-11 overall and 13-3 in conference play, good for second in the regular season. The Falcons ended the year with an RPI ranked No. 46 after winning the MAC Tournament and defeating Yale in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history.
Among the team's 14 non-conference games are 10 opponents that finished the year ranked with an RPI of 75 or better, including two top ten RPI opponents (Louisville at No. 7 and Kansas at No. 9). As well, the Hampton Inn Invitational at the Stroh Center will feature arguably the strongest field of volleyball teams ever assembled in Bowling Green.
After the White and Orange scrimmage on Aug. 24, BGSU will host the Hampton Inn Invitational Aug. 30-31. The Falcons bring in three teams that finished with an RPI of 33 or better and two that finished 2012 in the top 25. BGSU will face Marquette, Creighton (concluded 2012 at No. 24 in the country) and BYU (finished 2012 at No. 12 in the nation).
“I am excited about hosting the Hampton Inn Invitational on opening weekend where we can showcase our team to our fans against three excellent teams,” Tomic said. “There is a new excitement about BGSU volleyball in the community and we want to make it a tradition to bring some of the best teams in the nation to the Stroh Center, so that our fans can experience and enjoy an elite level of collegiate volleyball.”
From there, the Falcons will head to the Golden Dome Invitational to face Purdue, a team that ended the year ranked No. 15 in the country, and Notre Dame (No. 39 in the RPI). BGSU will also play an exhibition game against Dabrowa, a team from Poland.
Things don't get easier as BGSU heads to the Intowner Invitational in Madison, Wisc. The Falcons will face Milwaukee, Kansas (closed 2012 at No. 25 in the country) and Wisconsin. BGSU then returns home to host Youngstown State Sept. 17.
The Falcons will conclude non-conference tournament play at the Louisville Invitational to face Rice, Virginia Tech and Louisville (ended 2012 ranked No. 17 in the country).
Bowling Green opens conference play Sept. 26 at Miami before the home conference opener in a rematch of last year's MAC Tournament Championship against Northern Illinois Sept. 28. The Falcons also host Buffalo (Oct. 11), Akron (Oct. 12), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 18), Central Michigan (Oct. 19), Miami (Oct. 31), Ohio (Nov. 8) and Kent State (Nov. 9) in MAC play.
The Falcons will also play a non-conference match at Oakland Oct. 15 and will play at Dayton, a team that ended 2012 ranked No. 19, after the MAC Tournament on Nov. 29. The MAC Tournament will be played Nov. 22-24 before the NCAA Tournament begins Dec. 6-7.
