Three Falcons Named To Preseason All-MAC East Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio—The Mid-American Conference released the Preseason All-MAC teams on Thursday afternoon, with three Bowling Green State University volleyball players being named to the All-MAC East team. Paige Penrod, Danielle Tonyan, and Lindsey Butterfield garnered preseason attention, a season after earning first-team All-MAC honors.
Penrod, a native of Circleville, Ohio, played in all 130 sets last season. She was named the Mid-American Conference Tournament's Most Valuable Player, as the Falcons won the MAC Tournament for the first time since 1991. She averaged 3.78 kills/set in 2012, totaling 491 kills. Penrod also registered 40 service aces.
Tonyan, a McHenry, Ill. native, was a first-team All-MAC player last season. Tonyan recorded 417 kills a season ago, while playing in all 130 sets. She averaged 3.21 kills/set, while also adding 0.82 blocks/set. Tonyan, a left-side hitter, is one of the five returning Falcon starters, and one of seven seniors on the roster.
Butterfield, a graduate of Springfield High School, in Springfield, Ohio, also garnered preseason honors a season after earning postseason All-MAC accolades. Butterfield, also a left-side hitter, averaged nearly three kills/set in 2012. She recorded 378 total kills, while playing in 129-of-130 sets on the season.
The Falcons will begin the regular season tomorrow, when they host Marquette at 7:00 p.m. inside the Stroh Center. The game is part of the Bowling Green Hampton Inn Invitational. The tournament, which will feature five games in two days, also includes No. 13 BYU and No. 25 Creighton.
