September 02, 2013 | Volleyball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's Kaitlyn Skinner has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the MAC Office on Monday afternoon. Skinner, a native of Cambridge, Ontario, averaged 1.55 blocks/set during the Bowling Green Hampton Inn Invitational. The tournament included Marquette of the Big East Conference, No. 25 Creighton, and No. 13 Brigham Young.
In the first match of the tournament, Skinner was a force in the middle, recording eight blocks and four kills for the Falcons. The Falcons were defeated in four sets in that match, but Skinner was a thorn in Marquette's side all evening.
In Saturday evening's win over No. 13 Brigham Young, Skinner was dominant, especially in the fifth set at the net. The win, which was the first ever for the Falcons over a ranked foe, came in five sets after the Falcons had lost the first two sets. Similar to Friday night's match, Skinner recorded four kills and eight blocks against the 13th-ranked Cougars. In the fifth set, Skinner teamed up twice with teammates for assisted blocks to turn the Cougars away, and once she recorded a solo block, which at the time gave the Falcons a 10-3 lead in the decisive set.
Skinner and the Falcons return to action this weekend at the Golden Dome Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The Falcons will face 22nd-ranked Purdue, in addition to host Notre Dame in the tournament. Dabrowa (Poland) will also provide game action for the Falcons, although that match will be an exhibition according to the NCAA. On Friday night, the Falcons face host Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Orange and Brown (1-2) will square off with Dabrowa, before closing the tournament with Purdue on Sunday morning.
